A Visiting Fan's Expectations for IC

Mostly a lurker here, but suddenly have (and will take advantage of) the opportunity to attend the game on Saturday in Iowa City. Now, I've been to nearly every home football game over the past 5 years, but this will be my first on the road...

    1) I know the general courtesy and good-naturedness of Cyclone fans at JTS is not the norm throughout college football, and I'm not expecting a warm welcome outside or within Kinnick, but what level of hostility should I be prepared for? I'll be with my dad, who (while a huge Cyclone fan) is way too disconnected from the rest of the sport to properly grasp the contrast between fanbase attitudes. He may need a little pregame tune-up on how to properly distaste this particular clan.

    2) We're sitting in section 135. Are these the visitors' seats or will we be immersed in black and gold? Research seems to say that the visiting section has moved around a bit in the past, so I just want to be sure.

Looking forward to some distressed and melting down Hawks both during and after the game! Go Cyclones!

I would expect fecal matter to be thrown in your general direction, similar to the way that chimpanzees do.... Is this a direct correlation. Possibly

Don't casually or jokingly pick fights - Hawks will take you up on your offer.

Conversely, on our trip to Lincoln in '05 (double OT loss...) I offered to "settle this outside" with dozens of 'skers. Not one obliged. In fact, most said, "good game." Why I thought we needed to go outside of an outdoor stadium is beyond me...

I've been to 4 ISU-IA games @ Kinnick where I didnt participate in some manner.
The key for the avg fan is to surround yourself with as many ISU fans as possible.
Plus you need to know what areas to avoid.
Its really not so tramatic if you are smart about it.

Excessive intake of alcohol, we all know, kills brain cells, but naturally it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers.

I have been to two ISU games at Kinnick. Both times I have surrounded by pleasant fans. A little good natured ribbing but nothing more.

Re: A Visiting Fan's Expectations for IC

The only area you need to avoid is the student section. The "Chicago"land (they say they're from Chicago if they're from the state of Illinois) students are typically major douchebags. The rest of the stadium fans will be fine. Probably good natured ribbing, but you'll get that anywhere.

I've gone to this game several times in IC with ISU friends, and nobody ever had a problem.

They have been reasonable, and even funny, every time I have gone. They were really unhappy after the loss in 2002, but I would think you'd be fine if you're not being obnoxious.

Going to a Nebraska game in Lincoln was worse for me.

Re: A Visiting Fan's Expectations for IC

After the Cyclone victory, be prepared for a flock of hawks wanting to pick a fight. To avoid confrontation, as a last resort, simply tell them you're a friend of Ricky Stanzi. You'll avoid a fight but you will have to deal with them forming a circle around you and touching themselves. I recommend wearing rain gear. Good luck!

I had beer cans thrown at me in the Finkbine lot in 2006 for doing nothing but merely standing there waiting for my g/f. I didn't have any problem in 2010 when I was with more sophisticated fans. It's all about where you are.

Avoid the student section, dont make eye contact with drunks decked out in a Drew Tate jersey, and don't sit near the band (as a bandie I had beer thrown at me once and what I believe to be a bag of pot the other time)

Re: A Visiting Fan's Expectations for IC

This will be my fourth trip to Iowa City. I really havn't had a problem. I probably could have gotten in a fight my last trip while inside the stadium, but fortunately I was smart enough to not come back to the same section during halftime. I found some ISU fans to sit near. Lot of it centered around the fact that the whole end of the stadium didn't stand for the fight song and the fact that we were getting beat . ..

In general most are pretty good, be prepared that the douchebags will show themselves though.

Don't ever sit near ANY marching band is a good rule to live by.
