Spitballing the '12 Season After One Game.

Thanks to my ISU Stadium bottomless soda cup, I've got the schedule right here in front of me:

    9/1 Tulsa: WIN

9/8 @ Iowa: If the team corrects their mistakes and keeps their heads, they should win this one. Not a gimme, but winnable. WIN?

9/15 WIU: WIN, unless we have our biggest collapse of the Rhoads era.

9/29 Texas Tech: Tentatively a WIN. We should be able to beat them at home based on last years game in Lubbock, barring a BIG upgrade on their part.

10/4 @ TCU: I don't know. They're good, but they're playing a BCS schedule for the first time ever. I'm going to say WIN?, but I may get more or less confident as September goes on.

10/13 KSU: We could beat them here, because we're due in this series. Thank God we finally get a home game against the Wildcats. WIN?

10/20 @OSU: I'd say WIN, but it's too early for me to be that drunk.

10/27 Baylor: WIN? Unless RG3 appeals his decision & gets reinstated, we've got an even chance.

11/3 Oklahoma: I'd love to say WIN, but I can't go there yet.

    11/10 @Texas: ditto.

    11/17 @KU: WIN.

11/24 West Virginia: I'm torn. On one hand, WVU is a national power. On the other hand, they've never played a Big 12 schedule before, and they might have enough bumps & bruises to their bodies & egos to be vulnerable at the end of the season. I'll say WIN?, but I will acknowledge that it's a pure guess at this point.

That puts my analysis at 4 WINs, 5 WIN?s and 3 "I Don't Think So"s. If we win 2 or 3 of the WIN? games and win all our WIN games, that's 6 or 7. Pretty good year, but you've got to figure in the Coach Paul Rhoads factor: We've won one game we had no business winning every year he's been the coach. So does that mean we win ALL the WIN? games (and finish with 9 wins), or just upset one of the three teams that I don't want to put in the WIN? category (OU, OSU, Texas)?

It's fun to do this after a win. After a loss? Not so much.

Six wins is success with this schedule. Anything more is gravy.

It looks to me like counting the WIN? games as wins, we could finish 10-2. I would never predict that, but I actually do think that possibility actually exists on the good side of this year's bell curve. Highly improbably, but more possible than ISU has experienced in many, many years.

And yet another reason why there were nearly 55K fans at the game yesterday. This staff and team have folks believing that any game can be a win. Also, like me, I believe many folks are showing up this year more excited about the game than the tailgating.
