    Joe Mauer has cleared waivers

How interesting could this be if he goes to another team?

Re: Joe Mauer has cleared waivers

He won't unless the Twins are going to eat a huge chunk of his salary and why would you do that when you're nowhere near being competitive? I mean, if you could dump $10,000,000 of his salary and get a piece or two to make your team a contender that's one thing but when you're dead in the water with no hope in sight why waste the money to pay someone not to play for you?

Maybe he is now good to go for the Royals or Cubs. They like castoffs.

This means nothing; nearly everyone gets put on waivers in August. Terry Ryan wouldn't be doing his job if he wasn't constantly gauging the value of his players. I'm sure this isn't the first time with Joe.

Re: Joe Mauer has cleared waivers

This part of the article explains what actually happened:
The fact is that big-name, big-money guys such as Mauer land on trade waivers in August all the time. Most players in the majors are run through the wire after the July 31 deadline for making non-waiver trades. This is usually not a sign of a team's desire to get rid of an expensive star but more of a procedural move to gauge potential interest in case a legitimate trade offer were to come about.
"Everybody in here's been through it at some point. We've all been run through in the past. It's a non-issue," said first baseman Justin Morneau. "There are probably two guys in the league that don't go through it."
I was listening to the game last night on the radio. They said he's already been taken off waivers. They also said these things are supposed to be confidential so somebody leaked it for whatever reason, but he will not be traded.

ESPN is saying he cleared waivers, meaning no team put in a claim (i.e., nobody wants his massive salary).

Yeah, he did clear waivers. Since no one claimed him, he could theoretically be traded now to anyone, but they aren't going to do that.

He is home in Minnesota. Not going anywhere.

He also has a no-trade clause in his contract.
