Best thing I ever ate- Childhood memories

What was the best food you ate growing up that today brings back memories of your childhood.
Spaghettios (sp) and a lot of those canned foods were staples for us. I remember living out in the country during the summer and warming up a can to eat while we watched Judge Wapner on People's court and then heading out to the pool after that.
I seem to remember eating a ton of my mom's goulash as well. Campbells Veggie soup, tomato soup, hamburger, and noodles.
And of course stops at the Aplington Dairy Sweet on the way home from the pool for an oreo mint freeze.

Re: Best thing I ever ate- Childhood memories

I remember really liking the pizza lunchables for some reason. I sometimes would put them in the microwave and heat them up.

Grilled cheese and tomato soup was another favorite. Also I believe my mom would said that I also really liked BLTs or pretty much B sandwiches. Then I started to add lettuce, but it took me several years to add the tomato which came at the same time discovered the wonder of garden vegetables. BLTs are still probably one of my favorite sandwiches today.

I also remember the days of sitting outside and eating watermellon. Probably spitting seeds everywhere.

Kraft mac and cheese. Mmm, we had it last night for dinner.

My mom made spaghetti with Jack Daniels. It is freaking amazing. I have asked for the recipe maybe 5000 times.

That's easy. Pez. Cherry flavored Pez. No question about it.

Re: Best thing I ever ate- Childhood memories

That would be my grandmother's creamed chicken and dumplings (heck, just about anything she cooked was beyond excellent). This was a family favorite that always got a lot of requests for birthday meals. It has chicken (duh), carrots, peppers, onions, mushrooms, celery, sour cream, paprika, salt, and pepper. The dumplings are not the biscuit-type dumpling you see in most places. They are more like a pasta than a bread and are not prepared with the chicken part, but are served as a base with the chicken and sauce on top.

I can do a respectable job in recreating this recipe, but it just never tastes as good as it did when she made it. The one time I nailed the sauce, the dumplings failed completely (forcing me to cook up some elbow macaroni instead), so I've never gotten it completely right. She's gone now, so I can't call her up and say "what am I doing wrong?!?" Mom can't make it to save her life, unfortunately. But at least it's still pretty good, even if it's not "grandma's."

All people who make sweepingly generalized, stupid, uninformed comments are idiots.

I'm going to ask for the recipe again right now, since she's never shared it. I'll also e-mail my grandma. If one of them sends it, I'll post it! It's a baked spaghetti, so the Jack Daniels keeps the flavor in, but some of the alcoholic content burns off.

I hadn't thought of this in years. Anybody remember Boondocks? I don't know if it's still there or not, but I remember as a kid stopping there on every trip north on I35 and having those cinnamon rolls that were bigger than my head. God those were awesome!

Other than this, anything and everything my German grandmother made on Sundays! The whole family who lived in town would show up after church and hang out until dinner. Probably 25 of us total. Best chicken noodles, potato cakes, dumplings, and green beans ever. Nice thread. Thanks.

Remember, you're unique. Just like everyone else.
