I worry that these girls bought into the pre-season hype, and felt like they didn't have to work as hard. Maybe came into camp a little out of shape. CJL strikes me as a "players" coach, rightly or wrongly. I hope they get into some serious conditioning, because with tired legs you don't do anything well in volleyball. That's the thing I took away from last weekend. Talent will only take you so far. I've never seen us give up 30 kills to a single player, I don't think.

We have limited pre-season matches, so make the most of it and try to get some wins. Where we start from now, we don't have a lot of chances to move up in the rankings unless we beat UT. NU looked like world-beaters early against UCLA, then gave ground. They will be hard to beat, but it's at our place.

I was a little down after this weekend, but after watching CJL's media conference I def. feel better about the season. She knows that it was great competition. And she said that she felt better after the first weekend with this years team than last years team going 3-0. She also said we played like a top 20 team with the potential of a top 10 or higher, which I thought was very spot-on.

Guess I don't share your concern about fundamentals - physical and mental. Having watched CJL teams over the past 3 years, she looks after that very well. Coach has taken on some serious competition in pre-season this year, for the reasons you have stated - to develop mentally and physically for the coming season. She could have scheduled some cream puffs for pre-season and boasted a winning record but she is sending a message about her expectations this season. More power to her. Go Christie.
