    Swagger

Im sick of people saying that we are in trouble with Tulsa, I'm one of those people. But the question I have is, do you think there will ever be a year where we start the year with some Swagger, where we aren't scared of anyone. What will it take or will we only get that feeling during basketball season

    @TedFlintKansas

Men want to have fun, women want to take fun out to the middle of the woods and shoot it in the head.

    Re: Swagger

It just sort of goes to show the general sentiment about ISU football. I don't think it's as warranted this year given what we have back. But oh well. The reverse is true of Iowa every year. They get the benefit of some good teams in the mid 2000s. They haven't won (tie) the Big 10 since 2004 yet they'll be 10-2 this year? C'mon. They've proved to be more of a 7-5 than anything else lately. We have to continue to prove it on the field fro many years to get any sort of preseason recognition. There is also the schedules. Ours is a real beaach. Iowa's is cake. The disconnect is that a cake schedule doesn't make you a good team. Same goes for us - a tough schedule doesn't mean you have a bad team. I guess we'll see.

Only when we have a team of Kennard Bankses will we finally have swagger.

    Re: Swagger

I'll say the same thing about Tulsa that I said about Uconn last year. We will win.

Yes, they have a history of winning...in Conference USA. Just like Uconn made a BCS bowl from the Big East. The level of competition is not in the same category as the Big 12. I'm not saying we will walk away with it, but we will win.

Who is saying this year's team doesn't have swagger, besides outsiders, talking heads and bloggers?

The feeling I get is that it isn't so much a knock on ISU but more a compliment about Tulsa. I think they are pretty good.

What I was talking about was fans, as a fan, a huge **** talking to everyone Clone fan, I just wish I could go into a season not worried about the outcome. I want to look at the schedule and be like, I see 8 or 9 wins there.

    Re: Swagger

It is the height of arrogance to assume, just because we are a Big 12 team and they are a "non-BCS" team, that Tulsa will lose to Iowa State. There is a difference between being scared of an opponent versus treating an opponent with the respect it deserves.

Tulsa returns a good team, and reasonable people can expect a good game between the two teams, without fear of being held in lower esteem by their fellow fans.

It sure would be nice to come into the first game and really click well from the beginning and roll over a non-conference opponent, even one as moderately respected as Tulsa.

It would seem like we have a ton of advantages with a team of upperclassmen, should be a rocking home crowd, etc. One of these days an (opposing) team will come in and be all jittery and pee one down their leg.

But history shows that we can play down to anyone's level. The NDSU game was close in the third, Northern Illinois was within a touchdown in the 4th, and UNI last year (whew!).

Maybe this year will be different and we will dominate a decent team at home early.

    Re: Swagger

We have had too many scary opening games in recent years for me to come into this with a ton of confidence. That will take several years of success to overcome. More specific to this year, I have a lot of concerns with QB play. Also, Tulsa is better than your typical season opener matchup.

My thoughts exactly...no matter who comes in the first game at Jack Trice, I want to come out clicking and show swagger. I know the coaches know you take no one lightly (see UNI, etc), but I remember last year both UNI and KU just had "blah" feeling to them.

Swagger is a tricky term...I always think Oklahoma...but, they have the ponies to have a lot of swagger.

I just don't want the first snap to be a QB fumble or something silly like that, or a 3 and out. Last year Vs Iowa I felt we actually did come out with a hint of swagger feel.

You must not be trying hard enough or your kool aide must be pretty weak. Some days I look at the schedule and think we could win as many as 10. The closer we get to kickoff the more and more I am seeing this. I probably won't be convinced otherwise until I see our first half or even game of football. The first game can be a very sobering experience although I think this will be a quality opponent and I imagine the game to be close.
