Another person falls off balcony in campustown?

I don't know much about it but on the south side of legacy there are a bunch of police cars and fire trucks with spot lights and a police tape line in "The Resort" construction area. Rumor is somebody jumped off the balcony again. This is becoming a major problem if true. Be safe fanatics.

I found a little bit of info on it in the Daily. Apparently the man is a current student.

They mentioned it on the news this morning. Was airlifted to Des Moines, so at least he survived the fall initially, and received medical assistance.

Alcohol and balconies don't mix. They should cover that in orientation.

Re: Another person falls off balcony in campustown?

Well I'm extremely saddened to wake up this morning to find this was true after all. Wouldn't surprise me one bit if the city of Ames makes a new ordinance that all balconies over 2 stories must be caged in.

are the railings just that small? Is this an ISU thing or does this happen all over?

No they aren't low at all. As whatchagonnado said above, people are just careless. The person was probably sitting on the rails.

I highly doubt that. The problem is not the railings...they are not low at all.

I know it's not that the rails are low but people being careless. But how else do you ensure safety though? Someone fell last night, another last VEISHEA, and I believe the prior year around VEISHEA as well. After Chamberlain lofts had someone fall on their balcony (only 3 storys compared to 5 stories last night) the last VEISHEA they had their balconies caged.

It's not up to the builder to ensure safety after they have built to a reasonable standard. If the problem isn't in the design being to low or the railings being loose etc no change is necessary. People make bad decisions sometimes, that's their own responsibility. I know that sounds harsh, and I hope the student who fell recovers as I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
