Truly amazing. I honestly believe if Iowa didn't play summer ball that you would see A LOT more kids in the bigs from here. But with the weather, its almost impossible not to play summer ball.

I agree. I know alot of Northern states play spring ball. But they play like 15-20 games per season is all, so I dont really think that is beneficial either.

I had never heard of summer ball (or any school sports played during the summer) until I moved here. In Ohio, baseball is played in the spring.

I'm pretty sure Iowa and Maine are the only 2 states that play baseball in the Summer.

Re: Jeff Clement Called Up to Pirates

I went to high school in both Connecticut and Illinois. CT had a 20 game schedule starting in early April, ending in mid-June. IL has a 35 game max starting in late March and ending in early June. I don't understand why Iowa plays in the summer. Seems like an ancient relic of a bygone era. Sure, playing in March can be really frickin' cold especially in driving snow (hitting a ball could be pretty painful on the hands especially with a wood bat), but most of the time, it's not too bad for too long.
