    Home Wine-Making

Anyone make wine before? What equipment do I need to get started?

Any good websites or other resources on the topic?

This is totally new to me.

Chesters coin and gifts in downtown Ames has everything you need. I go there for all my wine making needs.

Depends...what U mean by home wine making? Do you really mean "hooch"? As in, some people I work with...when I say I make wine...respond with...Oh, my grandpa used to make wine, you take a can of grape juice, mix in some sugar and yeast and (this is the most important part) put a balloon over the top. No, he made hooch, hon.

If you're really talking wine, Ian covered it below.

    Re: Home Wine-Making

I'd recommend the Northern Brewer website (linked in the first reply). They sell kits that come with step-by-step how-to videos. They also have a lot of good how-to videos on their Youtube channel.

I would just call that "bad wine". Hooch has to be ran through a distiller. Trust me, I live in North Carolina - moonshine capital of the world!

    Re: Home Wine-Making

Made it last year for the 1st and only time. Elderberry Blossom Wine. Boiling water over blossoms. Add the Sugar/yeast. November comes and drink it. Made about 33 bottles. Bought a hydrometer just because I wanted to check the approximate alcohol level, plastic hose for filling, friends donated wine bottles, ( I hate wine) My mother found her mothers elderberry blossom wine recipe in my grandmothers own writing. My mother is 88 years old. So the recipe cold be a very, very old, generational hand me down I copied the recipe, made labels and gave bottles to all my siblings and 1st cousins on that side of the family. Fun thing to do, I might try it again.
