Do we open our "play book" against Tulsa?

I know, it's the initial question teams ask themselves before every 1st game of the season. But at what point do you say, enough is enough? ...let's open up some mis-direction plays, some screens and gadgets? There's no reason we should be going down to the wire with these guys. Who cares if Iowa or any future opponent sees these plays... They have to stop us!

You play and coach to win games. So play calling should have no barriers, whether its the first game of the year or game 12 of the season.

better bring the A game and A coaching to game #1 or ISU will be 0-1.

Do whatever it takes to win. This isn't a patsy.

We are underdogs in this game...so the answer is easy: YES.

Re: Do we open our "play book" against Tulsa?

Why do people automatically assume we're going to win? This isn't a "typical" season opener...Tulsa is a solid football team.

ISU being underdogs at home should open some eyes.

If he does I bet the NCAA will make kickers running with the ball illegal to try to protect them.

Since we have Shontrelle and James both healthy I want to see some 2 back Oregon type zone read misdirection plays.

Re: Do we open our "play book" against Tulsa?

There are plays introduced every week of the season. I'm sure there will be plays available for Iowa that weren't available for Tulsa. That doesn't mean that they were holding back against Tulsa. There will also be plays that the team will add between Iowa and WIU.

Bingo. You change your playbook as you attempt to exploit mismatches and/or adjust to the next defense you'll face.

Re: Do we open our "play book" against Tulsa?

I believe that the playbook will be fairly vanilla. Not because Mess is saving it for later teams, but because of his philosophy. He talked about how limited his playbook was when he was playing. Something like three pass plays and three running plays. I think he likes the approach of finding 20 or so plays that we do really well and execute them so that you can't stop it. That gives enough to allow for play-calling variation, but allows us to concentrate hard on the basics.

Re: Do we open our "play book" against Tulsa?

I agree...we play to win...whatever works best and is needed. I do think they obviously save some plays for ideal situations (see wheel route vs Okie State).
