    New Wideouts?

The New Kids on the Block.
These are the guys I’d really like to put out there for discussion, because I think that there is a bright future at the position for Iowa State. I tossed together a collection of my observations from the Spring game and before, just to start some talk. Your impressions, agreement or contrary, would be appreciated.

    Ja’Quarius Daniels 6’3” 227 RFr
Made some leaping catches underneath coverage in the Spring that impressed me. Big and athletic, rather than a tight end he looks to me like a linebacker out there playign wide receiver—as in, when Lawrence Taylor was in his heyday.

    Tad Ecby 6’0” 201 RFr
Watching him in the Spring, it took me a while to latch onto who he reminded me of. A (much) bigger Aaron Horne, a receiver who finds the seams and slithers into them. Or Darius Darks with better hands. Speaking of which, Ecby is one of a new generation of Cyclone receivers who catches the ball with their hands, reaching out to snatch the ball out of the air as it arrives.

    Quenton Bundrage 6’2” 184 RFr
I saved him for last of the redshirts because he didn’t stand out to me in the Spring game, with a single catch that I somehow missed. Going back to his high school video, he shows remarkable hand-eye coordination and body awareness, along with sound acceleration to good downfield speed—though not a blazer. High school high jumper, so he has some hops as well. Manatee coaches told CPR that he was getting a steal, the odds seem that they were correct.

    Dondre Daley 6’3” 170 Fr
We probably won’t see him this season, but I thought I’d toss Daley in here because of similarities to Bundrage. Like his new squadmate also a high jumper, he has a long, lean frame, though as has been noted, he just turned seventeen a week or so ago. Also goes up to snare the ball. Very athletic, where Bundrage has a great deal of grace, Daley seemed to me more physically assertive and attacking. Hard to put that into words—especially when in much of the video I saw, he was only fifteen.

*by the way, I don’t think I’ve said this before, but for all of the people who were upset that a highly rated Iowa kid got away to Michigan last signing day—I was just as content with Daley.

    Quan West 6’3” 208 Fr
Too bad he blew out a knee at the start of practice.

    P.J. Harris 6’1” 160 Fr
A redshirt should allow him to add valuable muscle. HS coach compared him to Chad Johnson.

    Paul Rhoads' players never quit.

    Re: New Wideouts?

PJ Harris looks great in his practice videos. Love the face we are starting to recruit some size at this position to mix in.

Jarvis, Lenz, Horne might be the shortest group of WR in college football.

Daley has me excited the most out of this entire group. Good size and really catches the ball well

Bundrage and Daley are two guys I've been real excited about since the moment they verbally committed.

Out of those guys, Daley impressed me the most based off of game film. He has some serious potential to be a play maker.

    Re: New Wideouts?

I can't wait to see what happens after P.J. Harris and Grant Rohach have an entire off-season to work together on their timing. They gave me a great initial impression at the scrimmage I saw because they were working hard on the sidelines planning and breaking down what was happening when they were on the field.

Today on Miller and Brinson Arnuod said that of the 3 red shirt freshman Daniels looked like he would make the biggest impact and it wasn't because the other two weren't developing.

That surprises me since he is 4th on the depth chart at his WR spot and Bundrage is #1 at his spot.

    Re: New Wideouts?

I was a little surprised too. When asked about which WR AA would like to have had when he played he singled out Daniels.

It was a pre fall depth chart after he missed the vast majority of the spring with an injury.

I'm guessing that AA singled him out because he has a significant size advantage over the other receivers at 6'3 230. AA threw a lot of passes to Marquis Hamilton who had a similar big body. I think Daniels even has a bit more speed and athleticism than Marquis. As a converted QB he probably needs a bit more time fully emersed as a WR but when the light clicks on for him I can see him being a great target for the QBs. It will be like having a fast TE out there abusing CBs and Safeties.

Bundrage has the edge right now because of his natural talents and familiarity with the WR position but I can understand why AA could see JQ pulling ahead in the future.

I think part of that may be because Bundrage is likely our best vertical threat right now.

Ecby, IMO, a a rich mans Darks. Bundrage is a more smooth Money. Daniels is a slightly more versatile Hamilton. Harris may become a rich man's Sumrall. Daley, I don't know. He could turn into a lot of things. West could turn into a monster if his recovery goes as planned. Those guys could be great in a year or two. Let's not expect the world out of them this year though. They are just freshmen.

Also, we need another slot ninja. None of those guys fill that role behind West. Perhaps that's a place Nealy and Shontrelle can get some touches at.

I think Ecby could do well in the slot with decent quickness. However I would love it if they got Nealy on the field in the slot. Anything we can do to get playmakers on the field is awesome in my opinion.

Who was the guy that transferred out to play track? I figure the staff had him in that replacing west role
