Sports Injuries - do anti-inflammatory drugs really work?

I sustained a shoulder injury and my Doc gave me a cortisone shot this morning and prescribed 5x per day of anti-inflammatory drugs ?#??@ 5-per day for a month and if nothing gets better we proceed to an MRI.

Do they really work to repair the injury, or just treat the symptoms?

Could be they're hoping it will heal up on its own and the cortisone/NSAID combo will keep you relatively pain-free while your body does its own thing.

I think the idea is to keep the inflammation down so that the body can more efficiently heal itself, but I'm not a doctor.

This sounds like what they're using them for in your case. I've had to take anti-inflammatory pills when I've thrown out my back. It helped bring the pain level down, and in my case the inflammation was so bad it was preventing the chiropractor from making adjustments. So I guess to answer your question they kind of do both, they help treat the symptoms, and they help your body start healing.

Re: Sports Injuries - do anti-inflammatory drugs really work?

Thanks for all the replies. It's been about 7-hours since the cortisone shot and I admit, the pain and flexibility has improved.

I'm a little cynical and don't want to just take a bunch of drugs - especially when the injury happened last December. Seems like that would have been healed on it's own by now, and I didn't want to argue with my Doc regarding his prescription.

Doctor prescribes medication to treat and injury. Go to CF for second opinion.

Be hopeful when the drugs get the swelling down the damage is minimal. I've had my shoulder redone. It was the worst week of my life.

What shoulder injury? I'm recovering from Bursitis/impingement and had a cortisone shot followed by PT for 10 weeks. Mine is pain-free now but I'd stay it still feels a little different than my other shoulder.

It's people like you who take the Doc's prescription for antibiotics when you have the flu. Question authority kid; there's people who will take your money for anything.

He called it a 'Frozen Shoulder' and the X-Ray showed early stages of a bone spur, or maybe beginning arthritis.
