Templeton Slugger (Beer aged in TR barrels)

I made a trip up to the Potoi Brewery in Wisconsin last night (if you haven't made that trip and you are a beer drinker you really should Potosi Brewing Company or even if you are a woodworker the bar is handmade and incredible). I was excited to discover the had just introduced a new beer called Templeton Slugger.

News About the Potosi Brewing Company

The waitstaff last night wasn't terribly knowledgeable, but the best I can determine it's their Fiddler Oatmeal Stout aged in Templeton Rye barrels. I'm not sure if it will be a regular offering or if it's a one time deal. I'm heading back up there for brewfest (also very highly recommended - all the best breweries in Wisconsin are there) in a couple weeks and will hit up their brewmaster for some more information. He's a great guy and

My own personal review was it was a solid beer. You could definitely taste the stout and the Templeton. It was very drinkable for a "big beer". Not my favorite Potosi beer, but I would definitely have another next time I'm up there.

I figure the combination with Templeton and good beer would spark some interest on here.

We drive by the brewery every time we make the trip to my home town, but I've never stopped in. I'd be interested in trying this beer. Hopefully they distribute it throughout WI.

We went up to the Potosi "brewery" last year. Its really more of a restaurant since their beer is contracted by Minhas. All of the beer that you drink at the restaurant is brewed on the premises which is nice. The food was pretty decent, but as far as the beer goes...eh. Left a lot to be desired. I would much rather spend the extra hour and drive up to New Glarus. Their brewery is pretty neat. Really clean. Plus their beer depot rocks.

I second this. New Glarus >>>>>>> Potosi. I'm always up for trying new beers though.

Paul, at Great River Brewery in Davenport, has been doing this for a few years now. Cask conditioned ales in the Templeton barrels are very nice!

I don't get the love for New Glarus. In my opinion, the best WI craft brewers are Rush River and Central Waters. They put out consistenly good beers with interesting styles. I've also had a couple good ones from O'so, Furthermore and Tyranena recently. I'm not sure if any of those are distributed in Iowa, though.

Unless it's changed I believe all of the beer they sell outside the brewery is done through Stevens Point. I will agree there is a definite difference between the beer onsite vs the beer you get in the store. They had several new selections this trip including a new pale ale that was really solid.

IMO New Glarus and Potosi each have some solid beers. I love the New Glarus black IPA and when Potosi has their Gandy Dancer Porter on tap I have trouble staying away. To be the Potosi brewery wins for the overall experience (great food, great people, non-profit place owned by the city) and the fact that I'm < 30 min away.

New Glarus will be at the Potosi brewfest at the end of the month though and I'm sure they I'll spend a fair amount of time with them sampling. They didn't make my top 5 though last year.
