    Terrain, Equinox or Traverse

We may be getting a new vehicle and are looking at these three right now. Any preferences out there? Will need to buy something that we can use our GM card $ on, so that is why we are looking at these. It will actually be my husband's "commuter" vehicle, so for me gas milage is important. Anything should be better than the 10 yr old TrailBlazer he currently drives from Ames to DSM during the week. Don't need to pull anything, so towing isn't important. It looks like the Terrain gets the best mileage. It has been 10 yrs since we researched SUV's. Any benefit to AWD over FWD? He is used to having the 4-WD as an option. Thanks for any input.

I'm a huge fan of my Cardinal 2011 Equinox

If you want mileage, the Equinox is the way to go. Lot of good reviews on that vehicle and it's what a lot of my co-workers drive. FWD will definetly give you better mileage and with the traction control systems that are out there, will work nearly as good as an AWD other then in the very heaviest snows. Lot of bang for the buck.

That being said, I'm going to be getting a Traverse next spring some time. I've got 3 high energy kids and it's important for us to put some space between them and to have some trunk room. Reviews have been a little more spotty on them. Mileage will be nothing to brag about. I'm thinking just FWD.

    Re: Terrain, Equinox or Traverse

We've had a 2010 Traverse for 2 years now and love it. Pulls a 17 ft Bass Tracker and you don't even know its there. Obviously when you compare it to Equinox there are some size, mileage, and comfort trade offs.

Very quiet and comfortable on long trips. Gets 18-21 MPG around town and 21-22 MPG on highway. Got 25 MPG on one tank of premium gas on long trip.

If you're looking for a commuter vehicle and not planning to haul or pull anything, ditch the SUVs. Sounds like your husband is a Chevy guy, so why doesn't he look into a Chevy Cruze or something along those lines? His choice of course, but an SUV doesn't really make any sense as a "commuter" vehicle.

    Re: Terrain, Equinox or Traverse

I can't comment on the other two but we have a Traverse and love it. We have two kids and love the ability to bring friends with us when we go places and still have some trunk space. I also play hockey and golf and like the trunk space for those reasons.

    Re: Terrain, Equinox or Traverse

None of the above mentioned vehicles.

    All are GM.

Do not buy GM. The problems are at GM right now.

The problems that will not go away either.

There are so many other makes and models to consider first.

    Re: Terrain, Equinox or Traverse

Thanks for the input so far. Hoping that eventually he won't have such a long commute, so thinking beyond that fact. Also planning on ditching the GM credit card after we use up our credit, but when you have free $ you tend to want to use it. We have an opportunity to purchase a brand new vehicle for not very much money, otherwise a new vehicle wasn't even on the radar at this point.

    Re: Terrain, Equinox or Traverse

I like my Terrain a lot but if gas mileage is a concern do not get it. If you are commuting a lot, get a car.

    Re: Terrain, Equinox or Traverse

Not sure how many engine options there are on the Traverse, but a friend of mine got one for a rental and that thing was a dog. There was one point where he had to hammer it pretty good. There was lots of noise from the engine, but acceleration was horrible.

I am assuming it was just a smaller engine since it was a rental. Liked everything else about it, though.

If you don't need towing or space why are you looking at an SUV? Hell buy a $13K fwd Spark and pocket the rest and than never buy another GM product.

    Re: Terrain, Equinox or Traverse

Just saw a Motorweek show last week comparing small SUVs. 1) Honda CRV 2) Kia Sportage 3) Toyota RAV4 4) Chevy Equinox.

    Good luck with your choice.
