Playstation 3: Red Screen of Death

Had this happen to me today. Im an everyday reader of CF but seldom post.

I did not use my ps3 all summer due I being busy with a summer job. Now that I am back in Ames, I recently got a new LED tv and needed an HDMI cable for the ps3. Well, upon plugging in the cable and turning on the ps3, I discovered the RSOD.

Has anyone had this happen before? If so, what is my best plan of action? Is there an easy fix? If not, what is the cheapest way to fix it.

    Thanks in advance!

I have never heard of this problem. Is it a output issue with the HDMI? I have had plenty of these with my devices. For the cadillac of output methods, I have always had tons of problems with HDMIs losing signal randomly and then picking it back up.

Did you have component cables hooked up before you hooked up the HDMI cable? There is a setting in the PS3 for using either component cables or HDMI. If you switched from one to the other, the PS3 wouldn't be processing the video signal correctly for the type of cable you have hooked up.

If this is the case, hold down the power button for 15-20 seconds or so, the light will flash on the PS3, let it reboot and it will start up with default settings. It will then detect the HDMI cable and configure correctly. - Hopefully this is the issue and not something more serious.

Re: Playstation 3: Red Screen of Death

Doing a cursory google search shows that this is a software issue not a hardware one. I would download one of the software patches if this came up. I bet a system reformat from safe mode would also work. I would also make sure your system is up to date in terms of its OS software before I did any of that.

Not all of us are crazy. The rest of the world may be, but not us.

BTW, I have never heard of RSOD which is shocking since I have a PS3 and it has not blown up on me yet.

Hahaha I always said the same thing! Now I am dating a girl from Denison...

OT: From what I've heard the red screen of death is more 'fixable' than the red ring of death but it will probably involve some sort of modding if you do it yourself. I might look into the sony warranty, I know microsoft is pretty good at fixing red ring of death xboxs for free though it takes forever and is a pain in the ***
