    Tulsa-IowaSt Pregame thoughts

    Just want to start a thread devoted to game #1. I want people to include any thoughts they have on the first game. I realize we are still three weeks out but Tulsa is an experienced team and there are matchups we know will happen already.

    I will start with some quick facts and we can take it from there.

    Tulsa Golden Hurricane
    Conference USA
    8-5 Overall 2011
    7-1 in conference

    "2011 Big Games"
    @Oklahoma Loss 47-14
    OK St 59-33
    @Boise St 41-21
    Houston 48-16
    BYU 24-21

    Passing Yards Per Game: 248 (44th in NCAA)
    Rushing Yards Per Game: 191 (26th in NCAA)
    Points For: 33 (29th in NCAA)
    Points Against: 27 (64th in NCAA)

    QB Situation: Starter will be Cody Green.
    ( Former Big 12 Nebraska QB, struggled weekly while playing in Big 12.

    Key Loss
    Tulsa will be without their best LB against the Cardinal and Gold. 2 year starter Shawn Jackson is suspended for the first 3 games of the season.

    My own opinion as an avid sports bettor is this line is going to see lots of action on the Home Cyclones. Without the home field we would probably be 4-6 point dogs. Gonna be tough to lay off but thats the smart move here. We really have no answer as to how Iowa States offense will play at this point. We dont even know who the Starting QB will be. Where as we know Tulsa will have the ability to put up 21-35 points offensively. I know our Defense is fully capable of holding Tulsa to 17-28 points, I just dont trust that the offense can continue to run with them all game. I will wait and see what the O/U is personally.

    ISU: over 400 yards of offense. (only 125 by air)
    Tulsa: 225 yards of offense.

    ISU D looks good.... really good.
    ISU O is dominating upfront.

    I could go for this, but I hope to get more yards through the air to settle my nerves about the QB situation.

    I'll have what he's having.
    I see us struggling in this game a little.

    Re: Tulsa-IowaSt Pregame thoughts

    our offense will struggle in the first half and pick it up just enough in the 2nd half and we squeak out a close 28-24 win. defense will look good but will give up about 350-400 yards due to the offense putting them on the field alot

    Something along the lines of this. I was thinking 24-21 ISU in a close one. Our running backs are the only consistency we have on offense, so whoever starts at qb will be a question.

    We could play well and still lose this game. Tulsa's good enough to beat us when we play a solid game. That's scary.

    Very, very, tough opening game, score will be close, and we squeak by on the strength of our defense.

    Should be a tough game. Wouldn't want to see you lose because we would probably take you less seriously the next week. I will say push on this one.

    Re: Tulsa-IowaSt Pregame thoughts

    Tulsa is no push over. We always seem to struggle in the home opener (see last years home opener vs UNI) If you think we're going to walk away with a 20+ point victory, you need to put the cardinal and gold kool-aid away. I'm worried about this one more than I'm worried about the Iowa game. But look at this way, no pan, no gain, and we'll be better prepared for the game in Iowa City than the Hawkeyes will be.

    Close game at the end, Steele Jantz heroics win it once again. Something like 27-24 final with a 40 yard TD pass with 0:03 left for the win.

    It will be very similar to this game IMO: Northern Illinois Huskies vs. Iowa State Cyclones - Recap - September 02, 2010 - ESPN

    I think we win by close to two TDs.
