It's a shame they couldn't find a more scenic location.

And the prospect of cutting down trees has brought out some high profile protesters, says the Chronicle, including Woodstock emcee Wavy Gravy and veteran tree-sitter Julia Butterfly Hill.
Veteran tree-sitter? Do they offer a graduate degree in tree sitting from Cal or only a BS?

It better look nice, they have had a full year to fix it, because they played their home games at AT&T last year. Last time I was there they had sections blocked off because the seats were not safe and you had to use a porta-john.

And that in the distance is the fog off the coast of SF.

What's it to you? I'm a veteran tree sitter too. I've sat on many trees after cutting them down.

Re: Cal's stadium renovations looking nice

I'm anxious to see what the renovations look like in person sometime. Having seen many games there in person, Memorial Stadium has always been a favorite place of mine to watch football.

One of the interesting things about the upgrading has been the seismic retrofitting of the place. It was built right on top of the Hayward fault, which runs up and down the East Bay. You could see where the stadium was being ripped in half at the top of the south end zone and put your arm through the hole. I have a photo of it somewhere, but couldn't find it, so I found this one from cyberspace. Pretty amazing situation when you think about it.

California's dead broke, and they're renovating a college football stadium? Whatever. Good luck with that.

Once they pulled the protesting hippies down out of the trees, that project moved right along.

Public funds are not being used for the project, which was long overdue. Aside from the rotting bench seats, the main purpose of the construction was a seismic retrofit of the stadium so that it wouldn't collapse during a game should even a moderate earthquake occur on the Hayward fault which lies directly underneath the structure.

The odds of a quake occurring at the same time as a game with 73,000 people in an unreinforced concrete stadium atop a major faultline is pretty slim. But the Loma Prieta quake happened when Candlestick was full for the World Series in 1989. They were fortunate that the quake was centered relatively far away and that the stadium was a more modern steel structure.

Here's some information about how Cal is paying for the retrofitting:
