Snap suggests Apple out to 'screw' hardware hackers

Snap suggests Apple out to 'screw' hardware hackers ? Reg Hardware
Apple is designing its own, entirely proprietary screw-head in a bid to prevent punters and repair shops getting inside its future iDevices.
At least, it is if - and it's a very big 'if' - you take a piccy posted on the interweb at face value.
Captioned "a friend took a photo a while ago at that fruit company, they are obviously even creating their own screws", the snap shows a screw with a rounded thread and a head of maze-like complexity.

& I always despised torx screws on computers...

I actually prefer the Torx, the tool doesn't slip out of the grooves like with a Phillips or flat head. Determining the correct size can be a pain though.

If true it's a little surprising they haven't done this until now honestly.

exactly why i dislike apple, they are closed to any and all folks trying to customize and make their products even better, or better yet, even repair and maintain their products without having to go to some dooshe at the apple shop..

If they use them it won't take long for a Chinese company to reverse engineer the threads on a standard headed screw.

You'll see a Harbor-freight-esq type tool to take those off in no time.

I dislike them when working with PC's - only HP and IBM (at least used to) use them and it's a pain when working in a mixed environment.

Yeah, our stuff is basically all HP so it's the same screws throughout.

I guess that is one reason to have a hardware monoculture.

No need to switch tools, think of the efficiency!

That efficiency is usually lost in the time it takes to find an IT employee who can function in society and deal with an end user. So in other words, still switching tools.

Re: Snap suggests Apple out to 'screw' hardware hackers

This is one huge reason why Apple sucks. They make the machine impossible to do any self repair on. Most computer problems can easily be fixed with a google search, a screw driver, and some replacement parts. Apple requires you to pay hundreds and send in the computer.

You can machine your own screwdriver like that if you have the patience and tools.
