    Tragedy At Marathon Trials

Shay, one of the state's top distance runners and the 2003 U.S. marathon champion, died Saturday morning after collapsing about 5 1/2 miles into the trials race in Central Park. He was immediately given CPR and was transported by ambulance to Lennox Hill Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:46 a.m., said Mary Wittenberg, president of the New York Road Runners.

I hadn't heard of elite runners dying while competing before.

Wow, that is scary. It will be interesting to see what the cause ends up being. 5M in is too quick to be dehydrated or overhydrated.

I bet there's something wrong w/ his heart that was never discovered. Isn't that what killed that cop in last month's marathon?

yeah, but you would think a us champion marathon runner would have found out before hand. Of course then someone like Hoiberg did not find out until he was in the NBA for years.

Exactly. A buddy of mine played for basketball for UNI back in the 80's and they just found a hole in his heart a few years ago. Probably had it since birth. You'd think that someone would have caught it.

I have a friend who graduated from both Ranger and Special Forces school, served for 6 years in Special Forces and was going through his first "over-40" physical when they found a hole in his heart. Birth defect, and it caused his lungs to function at 50% efficiency.

    Dude, THAT is tough.

Not that it has anything to do with this, but Katie Holmes completed NYC today. 5:29, not too shabby.

Shouldn't this be in another "unnamed, unmentionable" thread? Or is this a different Katie Holmes?

She's a descendent of aliens, right? I would think that should at least get her in under four hours. Not impressed. Though watching the bouncy in person might impress me

I read last night that Shay had an enlarged heart which was diagnosed when he was 14. However, doctors cleared him to run saying that while they thought he would need a pacemaker later in life it would be safe to run while he was young. Sad deal.
