Explanation of the inbounds/out of bounds TD replay

OK, I got this straight from the horses mouth.

The guy I ride up with works on the sidelines for the replay officials. He has a headset on the entire game and can hear any and all communication between the officials upstairs and the field officials.

    What happened is this:

Accoridng the replay rules, the official can look to see if a player is inbounds from the 5 yard line to the goal line. If the ruling on the field is that he is OB from the 5 on in, then it can be reviewed. If the replay official determines that he was not OB then the ruling can be overturned and a TD can be awarded.

What happened today is that the official called him OB at the 6 yard line. By doing this, it was not reviewable. It's my understanding that he was inbounds and did score, but because he was ruled out at the 6 and not the 5 then there was nothing that could be done.

That is a rule that I did not know even existed. Like I said, I got it from one of the officials working the game so I think he's probably a reliable source.

For a non-reviewable play they sure wasted a lot of time "reviewing" it as the game was stopped for over 5 minutes I bet.

    Interesting to hear.

I find it really odd that it's only reviewable inside the 5 yard line. Why not anywhere else?

The whole discussion was if it was something that they could even review or not.

It was very odd, but I do know K-State got hosed on that call.

Thats what I thought was rediculous. They spent all that time "reviewing" a non reviewable play.

My guess is because of when the play would get ruled dead. If you "step out" questionably at your own 10 yard line, it would be likely to be whistled done before the runner was tackled.

I would beleive that if a player is ruled out then the play is whistled dead. If he was ruled out at the 50 and the defense stops playing then the review shows he wasn't. Where would they spot the ball?

on a missed call, or inadvertent whistle, I believe the ball is placed at the spot where the play was whistled dead

Can your buddy explain why that wasn't intentional grounding on Freeman?

Re: Explanation of the inbounds/out of bounds TD replay

If you look at the replay there was a guy in the vicinity. I agree though, the intent was there.

Besides, he only hears the conversation between the upstairs official and when the ref takes the headset.

Re: Explanation of the inbounds/out of bounds TD replay

I have a question about the defensive holding penalty we got called for I think in the first half. First of all how can you have defensive holding on a run play?? Second of all, isn't a defensive holding penalty either the result of the play or the yardage from the penalty but not both. That defensive holding penalty was tacked on to the yards KSU got from the run play????? That one had me baffled.

And yes KSU got hosed on the TD call.....Thank goodness the zebra's screwed up in our favor this time.

Watched the replay-the RB was *just* over 10 yards away. I don't know what the rule is to make someone "in the vicinity"

Exaggeration is a BILLION times worse than understating.
