Fellows, it is time to go out and win more than eight games to shut the naysayers up.

    Enjoyable read.

Refreshing to read a realistic assessment of what has occurred the past few seasons after reading a lot of lofty expectations/predictions from this board.

Re: 2012 Iowa State Football Preview: Convince Me, Coach

My two biggest quibbles with his article are the fact he insinuates that we get blown out by unranked teams. While it's happened, it has happened less as the years progressed and a few of these teams went on to have great seasons (Iowa and OSU 09).

The second is the idea that fans in Ames will get restless with 6-6 and an upset or two every year. If we're still doing this five years from now I will but foundations take time to build so two bowl games in three years with a .500 record is satisfying for now and there is now way Rhoads would be on the hot seat in two years unless he has a Chizik type meltdown.

After all, Conelley is a Mizzou alum and it took them five years to win a bowl game after Pinkel started. We all know they're far more fickle creatures than we are.

That was a really good article. It would take two years without a bowl for pressure to be put on Rhoads. I don't see that happening.

I was expecting to be angered by the article, but it was actually fairly well researched and insightful.

Re: 2012 Iowa State Football Preview: Convince Me, Coach

I really think this will be the year CPR ends up winning (at least)eight games. Kind of like that article said, we can beat ANYONE this year(just not everyone). I think we will be a lot more consistent this year, and less turnover/stupid penalty(and hopefully less drop) prone.

That was the most accurate season preview I've seen yet.

The offense needs to step up to the plate. If they can do that, a bowl game should be almost easy to achieve.

    Which isn't saying much.

recently departed seniors: Darius Reynolds and Darius Darks combined to catch just 64 of 142 passes thrown their way (a 45 percent catch rate) for 906 yards and a per-target average of 6.4 yards.
Where'd he pull that stat out of? Apparently it was counting all the balls over their heads, bouncing at their feet--and tossed into the stands. I call BS.

He can say whatever he wants, and coach it so as to sound entirely reasonable. He's still insulting our coach, and our school.

I think anyone calling our offense disappointing (based on performance) isn't insulting us. They're simply reporting the facts. Our offense has been stuck on bad.

If they turn around this year, we can be fantastic. If they don't, we can still work our way to a bowl game.

What he's saying is that CPR's bunch is stuck on "inconsistency". I've seen this team advance every year, and thus I find it insulting.

When he described "inconsistent" as getting those signature wins and then struggling with Kansas and UNI, at what point was that not truthful?

We're progressing as a program, but that guy gave a very honest evaluation that made sense. Evaluations aren't insulting; they just measure the evidence.

I have verified this stat by combing through the play-by-play from each game last year. Reynolds and Darks were the only two receivers in the corps to catch less than 50% of the balls thrown to them, and last year those two combined for about 1/3 of all the pass targets. Lenz, West, Gary, Young also had bad balls thrown to them but they still managed to catch more of them. Reynolds and Darks dropped a lot of well thrown balls too.

The part about it being a pattern that can't be broken.

Honestly? I attribute a much of the problems of the offense last season first to the myriad injuries on the offensive line, along with quarterback inexperience. There is no reason to anticipate a recurrence of the former--though it may happen--and the latter could well largely be resolved.

And in a month or so, we'll start to find out.

Re: 2012 Iowa State Football Preview: Convince Me, Coach

I don't think that it's a bad assessment. Some questions and comments on this year's team and keys to success:

    1. Obviously, QB is the biggest question mark. Can Jantz clean up the turnovers? Can Barnett improve his accuracy? Can either run the zone read consistantly without getting hurt?
    2. Can the DL generate a pass rush?

Those are the two biggest question marks for me. As far as losses:

    1. OL - They'll definitely miss KO and Hicks. I agree that the OL doesn't have the upside that they had with those two. That being said, the reserves saw some good experience last year. At least I would bet that penalties will be down. KO and Hicks amassed penalties like no other.
    2. CB - I don't know how Watson can replace LJ. My one hope here is that the pass rush improves enough that he doesn't have to play at LJ's level to be successful.
    3. DE - They lose a decent pass rusher in Latt and a solid effort guy in Neal. I don't know how Maggitt and Scott/Irving can replace them. Seems to me that those guys are soft compared to the hard-nosed players that were Latt and Neal.
    4. DT/NG - Rump was solid inside and ISU was terrible against the run. How does Laing improve the run D? I do think that he's better pass rusher than Rump. The one benefit is some decent depth that they didn't have last year with Woods, Jensen and Simon seeing time and Dubin coming on board.
    5. WR - Reynolds made some big catches and Darks did as well, but both had more than their share of drops. I do think that they'll miss Reynolds' abilities with jump balls. A lot depends on how Bundrage does.
    6. S - To me, Benton didn't perform nearly as well at S as he did at NB. Although he was a great Cyclone and captain, I don't think that we'll feel his loss. IMO this position gets better with Givens.
    7. LB - They can say that Klein is at MIKE full time, but he won't be. He's going to play MIKE against passing teams, but when they play more run-based teams that aren't spreading it out, George will come in and Klein will move to SAM...just like they did with Taufoou last year. IMO George will be an upgrade from Taufoou.

I think that we'll see a team that makes fewer stupid mistakes than last year's. But maybe they don't have the upside when they play to the top of their abilities.
