turn comes up Monday night but the Cubs are starting Justin Germano
instead, one more deal sweetener in hopes of landing somebody they like before Tuesday’s trade deadline. This way if a trade can be worked out, Dempster can start as soon as Tuesday or Wednesday for his new team.
That team is most likely to be the Dodgers, although a source in Atlanta says not to rule out the Braves, assuming Dempster has become open to doing the deal he killed a week ago. The Braves want a starting pitcher but only one who could work one of the first three games of a playoff series, and that list only included Zack Greinke
and Dempster a week ago.
With Greinke now an Angel, the Braves remain interested in Dempster, especially if the Cubs will pay part of his salary to make a deal happen. But Theo Epstein
and Jed Hoyer
continue discussing deals with the Dodgers, including a Hail Mary package that could include Alfonso Soriano
Interestingly, the Giants also have discussed Soriano with the Cubs. With Melky Cabrera
no longer an RBI machine and Pablo Sandoval’s
health a concern, they seem highly motivated to add an outfielder. They’re in on Hunter Pence
and Shin-Soo Choo
, but Soriano has been hitting with more power than either of those guys.
