Did you pick the cars up yourself or did you have them delivered?

One car I flew in and picked it up. Two cars I had delivered by an auto transport company. The motorhomes I picked up.

True about Amazon! Actually I used ebay and autotrader.com. So far I've been lucky, I researched the vehicles with carfax and photos and purchased from established dealerships. Thinking back it's totaled five cars that I've gotten online, I forgot two of them.

Curious about how you go about this? Do you test drive a few vehicles local to see what you like and then simply look some up on Autotrader? Once you find one you like, is it a deal where you have tg take the price it's offered at or can you offer something less? How do you work a trade if you have a vehicle you want to get rid of?

Good questions. I knew the exact vehicle that I wanted, year, make, model, color, mileage and options. I priced what I wanted on KBB, Edmunds, and the other one that I can't recall the name right now. If it were available locally I would buy it if the price were fair. By buying online, the seller does not have advertizing, showroom, sales staff, etc costs so their price should be considerably cheaper than buying off the lot of a dealership.

I then do a search for the exact vehicle that I want. If too many pop up that meet my criteria, I tighten up the criteria; lower the mileage, lower the price, etc. I try to boil it down to ten or so vehicles that meet my criteria. Then I factor in location (can I drive in with someone to pick it up, fly in or have it shipped) and distance. You can always contact the seller and ask for more pictures or ask detailed questions. I never buy online without purchasing a Carfax.com report on it. I eliminate all East Coast cars and especially ones from New York. Southern prices tend to be cheaper (Texas especially) and no rust, if you're looking for a good used vehicle.

I have found new vehicles online, got a quote and took it to a local dealer and they met the internet price-no questions asked. You can always give a seller an offer, they may just take it. On two separate occasions while I was watching a vehicle (saved it on Autotrader.com) the seller dropped the price $1000 so I bought. The AutoTrader.com website notifies the seller when someone has saved one of their vehicles.

Only once did I buy online and work out a trade with a dealer. He was in Colorado Springs, he had what I wanted and he wanted what I had so we did the deal by phone, fax, email and we met midway in Cozad, Nebraska and exchanged cars. Stay very patient, I've sometimes searched for six months or more to find the car that I wanted.

I sold one vehicle on AutoTrader.com and it went in a matter of a few days and at my asking price.

My latest online purchase was a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, 28,000 miles, Arizona vehicle with $6-$7K worth of upgrades on it for $17.9K:

In the last decade, four cars on Ebay from Texas, and one on swap-a-lease.com from California. All but one on Ebay was a one way ticket and drive home. Still saved money than a local buy. Never a problem and in fact.....had better service from dealers over one thousand miles away than those a few miles away here in central Iowa. If you do Ebay..do NOT buy from a private owner. Don't care if his feedback is %1000000! Always buy from a dealer with a plethora of feedback. Swap-a-lease was for a one year old car with remaining warranty.
