CR Gazette: ISU recruiting going well

You know recruiting is going well when the Gazette says it's going well.

WARNING: This article may contain positive comments about the Cyclones and spark hope in the future of Cyclone football.

Cedar Rapids Gazette: Despite struggles, ISU keeps getting players

    We're in good hands:

Rivals.com recruiting guru Jeremy Crabtree had good things to say about the recruiting abilities of ISU assistant coaches, specifically mentioning recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach Scott Fountain, quarterbacks coach Tony Peterson and receivers coach Jay Rodgers.

The staff has a number of ties to the southeast and in the state of Texas, where every team in the Big 12 spends time recruiting. ISU is working overtime there.

Well Nebraska and Norte Dame bring in a bunch of 4-5 star guys, see where it got them.....only a win or two above us....

I love the way Chiz is recruiting, focus on athletic players and improve technique....cant teach being athletic....you can teach technique....

I hope we get Mack, and i know marshall is in town this weekend, that would be two immediate starters IMO.....

    08 looks bright.........

Re: CR Gazette: ISU recruiting going well

The real key is getting 4-5 star recruits to commit. Getting them to at least look is a great start, but it doesn't do any good if they all look and then go to USC, OK, TX, etc.

With the coaching staffs' first whole year to work on recruiting, this year's class will be a defining one for the FB future at ISU.

4 or 5 Star Kids is NOT Realistic

Quote Originally Posted by lennon3 View Post

ISU could hire Pete Carroll or Urban Meyer and we still would not attact many 4 & 5 star athletes.

Face the reality- the state of Iowa produces maybe 4-5 BCS conference players each year & most of the time they are 2 or 3 star kids. Every couple years there will be a 4 or 5 star kid (Bernstine, Hoch, Arrington, Larson, etc), but that isn't enough to build a quality program.

If you are looking for ISU to regularly pull 4&5 star kids out of California, Texas, Florida, etc - how is that realistic. Similar to Iowa kids growing up and cheering on Iowa or Iowa State- those kids usually develop an attachment to their instate schools.

Even if a 4 or 5 star kid doesn't stay instate- a kid from CA,TX,FL, etc will be recruiting by traditional powers that have 10+ years of New Years bowl appearances and strong name recognition.

For Chizik to be successful he will need to identify the late bloomers or kids that fit perfectly into his system. He is also going to have to have tremendous stability within the program. He can't be like Mac and half of the recruits quit the team within 2-3 years. Chizik needs to bring kids in, be able to give them 2-3 years to develop and they are ready to start by their redshirt soph or junior years.

IMO this is the biggest single reason that we are in our current situation.

Not saying there were other factors. It seemed like each year the 2-3 headline guys we got never saw the field.

Re: CR Gazette: ISU recruiting going well

As far as football talent goes the state of Iowa mirrors the state of Oregon. There is no reason ISU cannot duplicate Oregon State's 10 win season of last year. Corvallis is further away from football hotbeds than Ames is and they have been putting together a winning program in recent memory.
