    Apostle Islands

Normally when we take a vacation on a whim, we end up on some small, tropical island.

Not this time. I'm tired of hot, so we are headed north, where the high will be in the 80's, the lows in the upper 50,s, and green all around. One reason we chose this area is because they have been getting rain regularly this summer.

So, where is a good place to eat and drink around these parts?

I will be curious to hear feedback on this. We have been thinking about heading to the Apostle Islands as well.

    Don't.....take....the.....Grand.....Boat.....Tour.........

Unless you are 70 years old with blue hair. I still give my wife grief for making me go on that. We were both in our 20's and I swear the crew was laughing at us as soon as we boarded the boat.

    Re: Apostle Islands

I'm not sure about great places to drink up on the Bayfield peninsula. I spent quite a few childhood summer vacationing up there, but we had a boat. The Apostle Islands themselves are great but I can't speak to night life. Devil's Island, Stockton Island, etc are neat places to visit, but I'm guessing you drove up sans boat. Of course Isle Royale is cool (the eye of Lake Superior) but that is nowhere near there.

My wife was thinking it was a good idea. I told her to have fun, I'll keep the kids with me so they don't have to be bored either.

    Your kids will be grateful.

It is kind of scenic, but basically you are trapped for 3+ hours on a boat that just seems to wind around aimlessly among the islands at a very low speed. After about 30 minutes you are like "Okay, I'm done." But no, you are stuck on that boat for at least 2.5 more hours.

How about going to Grand Marais instead. Either way stop at the Duluth Diner for a meal, make sure you order the banana pie. You can thank me later.

Spent a good portion of the da at toms burned out cafe on Madeline issland. It is a interesting place. The original bar brined toth ground 1n 1992. Instead of rebuilding, the owner improvised.

You can get anything you want at this place. Artists trading joints for pills. People always slipping away to snort corners, bumpin' the spoons.

    7 spotted cows and a banner j later, I'm taking a nap.
