    Point Guards

Just some random thoughts after being at last nights game. One of the more interesting things to see play out this year will be the point guard position, ground breaking conclusion I know. We really have three very different guys at this point in time and I think a reasonable argument could be made for any of them. My personal view, I felt the most comfortable when Peterson was running the point. Just kind of knew that there weren't going to be many mistakes and the offense was going to get run and the tempo controlled. Garret is the most athletic and as others have said has the most "upside", I really enjoyed watching him play, just something about him that made me smile. Having said that I don't think he can carry the bulk of the work load this year. Will have a hard time holding up physically all year. Could be one of those guys that the fans are always complaining should be playing more because he looks good when he is in but the coach knows what he is doing. Brister looked better than I expected and I think it needs to be taken into account that he had the poorest surrounding cast for parts of the game of any of the three. My opinion is that he came from a system that was the least structure of the three and that shows at times. But he looks like he has the ability to be the best perimeter defender of the three (something that we need as much as anything this year, a definite weak spot in my opinion). It will all come down to ability to make the right decisions for him. Depending on what kind of person you are and what you like to see you could make a case for any of the three.

I didn't think I'd say this, but I agree with you. I like Peterson at the point for now, I like Garrett to slash and finish, and I like Brister's defense.

Do you think we could see Garret playing the 2 at times with Peterson on the floor?

    Re: Point Guards

I think it is way to early to tell who should be our starting point. I think that peterson will really struggle against a bigger D1 team. Take into consideration that they had a mediocre D3 team. I thought that brister and garrett looked good and have a bigger frame to keep defenders away from the ball. All in all, I think that all three of these guys should see some PT. I was actually more impressed with Haluska and Boozer. They both have a sweet stroke and hopefully can convert that over to the regular season.

I haven't seen enough of each to have an informed opinion, but based on last night DG definitely seemed to show a little more of a scorers mentality. He has the ability to break someone down off the dribble. Therefore, I would say yes that could be a possibility.

    Re: Point Guards

I wasn't that impressed with Garrett last night. Played pretty sloppy. I don't think he will be a huge contributor this year, but that could easily change with practice. He needs time to grow.

I think Haluska/Brister would be a better option to go along with Peterson for PG.

Boozer could probably do it too, he is more of a shooter though.

    Re: Point Guards

Just as things did last year, I fully expect the lineup to change and evolve as the year goes on.

Also, I would anticipate it to change based on who we're playing...again...as it did last year.

Greg is clearly a coach that will use each and every pawn if he needs to. He's not a guy that will stick with the same starting 5 all year, beating his head against the wall. He adapts.

Sometimes Cory would get a lot of minutes down low for us last year. Other times, he never saw the floor. A few other situations like that last season.

I expect similar things this year.

I was encouraged by our guard play last night and also know it was against a very inferior team. Garrett did start rather rough, to be expected. I thought as the game grew on, he settled down and did some nice things.

    Re: Point Guards

Haluska would shoot too much for a point.

I expect Peterson, Brister and DG to continue to split time.

    Re: Point Guards

Peterson won't be the starting PG by the start of the season. He is a good PG but I don't get where all of you guys see that he did all these things so great. He only played 10 min. He is going to be a serviceable back up for us but when it comes to the big games Garrett is the starting PG.

    Re: Point Guards

I also think, that we'll have somewhat of a similar relationship with Boozer as we did with Taylor last year (on the court, mind you).

Boozer is a guy that loves, loves to shoot. That's great, we need guys like him. But sometimes, he's going to miss a lot of 'em and we're gonna get testy. He definitely is confident and I like that, as long as it remains in check.

Picture this though (as these guys improve)...

    Garrett
    Boozer
    Johnson
    Clark
    Brackins

Yeah, I know Wes is a 2, but he will play some 3 this year, I'm sure of it. I just really, really like the scoring and athletic ability of that group of 5. Not sure we'll ever see it though, but it sounds neat. And I think a person could substitute Haluska for Boozer, get a similar scoring thread and better defense - Sean was picking the pocket of guys quite nicely last night.

He also had 4 assists in those 10 minutes, zero turnovers, and ran the offense well while he was in. He's also by far the best shooting point guard we have.

He's got less offensive production than CMac right now.

I honestly think that all 3 PG will split time, with Garrett taking over the starting spot by Big 12 play due to his size and driving ability.

    Re: Point Guards

Peterson seemed the most comfortable out there of the three. Diante obviously has more skill and potential at the postition but Peterson might have to hold down the fort early in the season. Last night none of our PG's were tested with any pressure or anything for that matter so it's tough to tell but EA Sports should give us a better idea.

Brister needs major work on his offense, but I love his defense.

I'm not. Just looking from a complete athletic standpoint...quickness, speed, jumping, scoring, etc.
