Des Moines Marathon in 3 months

Decided to sign up for the Des Moines Marathon a couple days ago. I haven't ran that distance before, and havent been running much lately. I did a sprint tri a couple weeks ago, so i have been running, but not long distances. Longest I have ran this year was 7 miles a while back. I have done a dam to dam and the des moines half before, so I have ran further, but just not recently. Any advice from other runners out there? Anyone else running this race? Am I an idiot for doing this?

I trained for my first long distance race in 2.5 weeks went from never running over three miles to a 20k. (Dam to Dam in 08') So i am used to under training, but i know with a marathon you really need to get the miles in.

I did one in college after not training or running AT ALL...my dad was running it and asked me the night before if I wanted to try it with him so I did. I don't recommend that plan of attack FWIW

Im just glad I have Homan as my bodyguard, Eustachy joked. If I ever make it real big and get to drive a limo everyday, hell be driving it. I thought he came off the bench like somebody was stealing his cow or something.

Re: Des Moines Marathon in 3 months

Well, I think all marathoners to an extent are idiots but you should be able to train for it in 3 months especially if you're somewhat naturally talented. I did the Des Moines Marathon in 2010 and it's a pretty good starting marathon. The best advice I have for you is if you don't have a good set of running shoes, get them now or your risk for injury is much higher.

One thing I did and you obviously have the ability to do is vary your training. Run plenty but don't be afraid to hop on the bike when your legs are tired and go for a long bike ride. Same story can be applied with swimming. Personally I wish I had swam more to get ready for the marathon because your upper body being in good shape can really help.

I would also recommend doing some hills a month or so down the road. If you can help it run 5-6 flat miles and then do some hill running as that's kind of how the DSM marathon goes (flat start, hillier middle, flat finish). I wouldn't go anything more than 18-20 miles for training runs so you don't burn yourself out (I think my long run was 16?). Most importantly, find some good tunes to listen to because you're going to spend a lot of time training. If you can find someone to run or bike with you and carry water or bars that would also help you out.

The physical part of the marathon was easy in my opinion. The mental aspect is what will determine if you finish. You're going to be tired and it's going to hurt but you just have to keep it tuned out and keep going. For me it was nice to see familiar faces throughout the course and really nice to see family or friends the last couple miles when you need the kick in the ***.

Oh I will finish. Just a matter of looking like a stud crossing the line, or crawling and puking my way across the line. Thanks for the advice!

Cost was 78.50 plus 3 dollar online fee and taxes. 3 dollar online fee is bull-**** because they are only allowing online sign up.

I've run a lot of events but only one marathon. Training for it sucks and I don't think it's good for your body. I guess I can say that I finished one but after doing it I didn't run again for a year.

Now you got me thinking about actually doing it, I said I wanted to do a marathon sometime. I currently run 8 miles two times a week so I think i have a decent base to start training from.

About 14-15 miles in I was bleeding, blistered, and legs locking up. Ended up alternating between walking a light pole/running 2-3 to finish it up.

Side note if you haven't run one before: about 10 miles I was complaining about my nips burning and my dad goes "Well why didn't you ask me for bandaids or vasoline before we started?". I didn't have a clue that was a common thing and didn't know enough to ask beforehand, but I'm proud to say I restrained myself from pushing him into the ditch.

Good man. Yeah, nipple burn isn't something you ever consider if you haven't been warned about it.
