Headliners changes owners/turnover of campustown bars

I visited Ames over the weekend and was surprised to learn that Headliners changed owners and is now called Charlie Yokes. This got me thinking about all of the bars in Ames that have changed ownership in the last year.
    Headliners to Charlie Yokes
Capones to Club Blow to Five One Fifth (yeah 2 changes in ownership in a matter of months)
Sergeant Peppers to Cafe Mood (I think?)
    Club Element to Big Shots
There might be more but those were the ones I could think of at the top of my head.

I remember my freshman year (2009) that everyone always talked about going to Headliners and it was the place to be. When I turned 21 and finally went to headliners it was always dead and it makes sense why the old owners sold off.

Bottom line, Ames's campustown bars has a terrible turnover. What is going on in campustown?

Headliners was an abomination and should have been burnt to the ground the moment it was opened up. That exact spot on this planet is reserved for Peoples and no one else.

Screwed the Pooch when they let People's go. And Peoples has done just fine in DSM it seems.

After Peoples left it has never been the same. Every other reopening that has been there has been a failure.

You had to figure that Papa's Corner wouldn't last very long, but I thought Headliners had a decent run.

Re: Headliners changes owners/turnover of campustown bars

I think it would make for an interesting research project to compile a list of all the different business/names at each address in Campustown going back to, say, the 70s. Just to get a handle on the turnover, and to provide common reference points for these types of discussions.

I'm guessing that info is available through the City.

The curse of Peoples. Really, with how that all went down and Peoples getting forced out, they deserved to fail miserably.

Re: Headliners changes owners/turnover of campustown bars

Some Campustown businesses tend to have a tough time due to high property taxes (which exist because of the properties proximity to the university), and also the lack of parking doesn't help. Came across a new article from the ISD pretaining to these issues and how the redevelopment of campustown plans to move forward. Re: Headliners changes owners/turnover of campustown bars

That's just how it is with college bars. The turnover is continuous. Might be new owners, might be a new name, might be both. About the only college bars with staying power are the low key places that cater to upperclassmen. Those that rely on being trendy or hot aren't going to last because the nature of being trendy or hot is that it's temporary. Pick any locale in Campustown and old timers can tell you of its previous names from their era.

Yeah tell me about it. I went to it once when it was called Club blow and had the fear of being taken out. However, Five One Fifth that is there now is actually pretty good. I have been there a couple of times now and both times there were plenty of hotties to go around and a great atmosphere. And this is in the summer too so the school year theoretically should be even better.

They need to definately do something. But I sure as hell hope there is never an Applebee's or Olive Garden in Campus town.
