When to apply for a job??

I will be a senior in August and still debating on whether going to grad school right away or start a career. When should I start applying for a job that I would start in May 2013?

It's hilarious reading posts like this from students/recent grads. Makes me remember how little I knew about the real world at that age.

You should go to the fall career fair and probably start looking then. If they tell you to apply later(Spring career fair) you at least know that and they might remember you when you come back in the spring.

The sooner the better IMO. It's a rough place out there without experience and a well connected network. Good luck!

What's so funny about him trying to find out the best time to apply for jobs?

If you have a job lined up starting right after graduation. You will probably want the start date to be in June. Since when you start a job you probably won't get vacation for 6 months.

What's your major? If you are an engineer, start checking CMS and signing up and/or applying for interviews once you get on campus. A lot of people get hired from the fall career fair for full time positions. I personally didn't get a job until spring when I graduated in '09, but like someone else said the earlier the better.

Perhaps thinking back to when he was in the same boat and had the same question but didn't have a message board to ask.

    This.

I would have the career fair be your start date. Get on it early.

Re: When to apply for a job??

As far as grad school goes, I would say it depends on what your plans are for your graduate degree(s). If you plan on getting a PhD and go into academia or industry as a researcher, go straight into grad school and get it over with. That way you won't have to wean yourself off of a real paycheck when you go back to school (this is what I did).

If you just plan to eventually get a MS or a MBA, get a job first and eventually find an employer who will pay for your degree.

What company would be taking applications now for a job to start next May? None, or close to it. They don't even know what jobs will be open next May. It shows a lack of understanding how jobs come open and are filled.

The best time to apply for a job to start in May is going to be in April when some guy gives his notice and a job opens up. That's how the real world works.

Career fairs to get a resume into the hopper for "management trainee" programs or whatever have their place. But that's not applying for a job. That's signing up for a cattle call.

Meh, I got more than one offer out of the Fall career fair in '08 (graduated in May of '09) and accepted one of them. Spent spring semester killing brain cells in impressive fashion.

Much like everything else, the "real world" does not operate under the giant umbrella you just cast. It turns out when a company is doing well they will *gasp* hire further out to deal with expected growth rather than just react to a position they need to fill.

Congratulations. But that is not applying for a job. Sure he should do the career fairs. They come around like clockwork every fall and every spring. But he can't apply for listing job openings in August when he can't start until May. He'd have to be some kind of wunderkind for them to hold the job for nine months.

Public accounting actually do. They let you go through internships first and then hire you when you graduate

Not true. As somebody previously posted, the best time to start is before the career fair in the fall. Not all companies know what positions they need filled at that point but a good amount do. If they overhire but they feel that they have great newly hires, big companies will put these newly hires into "training programs" where they don't have to pay as much but once a job opens up, they still have the talent in house.

Now for the Spring career fair, pretty much every company knows what their needs are so if you missed the fall career fair, you better be at this one. If you wait until April like you suggested, I can almost guarantee you that you will be behind the ball on most every job. The only exception to that is probably small business.
