Pre Two a Days Special Teams

*I was going to go to the defensive line, but given some commentary on here, i think I'll rewrite lest anyone, um, accidentally misconstrue what I am saying.

    Special Teams

    Knowns
Kirby Vanderkamp is a good punter who had to compensate for the shortcomings of the kicking game last season, bringing his average down. Coverage was good, returns were good to very good, all of those elements return.

    Questions
Who is the deep snapper? And will we really have to rely on Edwin Arceo for short Shaggy-esque field goals? He showed that much in the Spring.

    Mystery Meat
I could add players like Nealy, Bundrage and Standard to the possibilities of the return game (or Richardson to coverage and punt blocking), but this one belongs to Cole Netten. I hate to see that kind of pressure put on a true freshman, but Vanderkamp handled it with aplomb—even glee. One question is just how big of a leg Netten has, at the very least as far as putting the ball into the end zone on kickoffs.

    tentative grade: 7.0 +/- 1.5
*Seriously. Everything else is in place for excellent special teams—but lack of a decent kicker could be a crippler. The biggest question mark on the team. If Cole has a frosh season like Kirby did, all bets are ON.

Snapper is spencer Thornton. I went to high school with him should be serviceable as a snapper lol. No idea how to analyze a snapper.

Zimmerman was pretty damn good all 4 years. That's my snapper analysis. Hope the new guy can be close to as good as Zimmerman.

I'd love to see West and Nealy returning kickoffs. We know West is elusive but IIRC Ken Pope was quoted as saying "Nealy could run through a shower and not get wet"

Re: Pre Two a Days Special Teams

I was kind of surprised to see that Beuker is also listed as the backup deep snapper. He's everywhere on ST (except returns). I guess that's why he's a captain, right. So, is he a future coach?

I don't ever want to know the name of our long snapper. If I do, it's bad.

I have noticed in warm ups that Bueker does snap to punters. I was a holder in high school so I know that it isn't exactly rocket science to figure out. I'm sure he has gotten lots of reps in practice if all he works with is special teams. He would make a serviceable backup from what I've seen.

If we have a kicker, we're in great shape.
I need to see a kicker succeed before getting too excited, but I'm ready to see a solid kicking game.

I want to see minimum two kickoff return TDs this season, I don't care who does it.

Getting one called back for a penalty does not count.

I think he's been asked to stick around as GA with Yancy. Knowing him on a personal level, i would be shocked if he didn't coach in the future.

Beuk was up to 247 lbs last year, so I asked what the heck was going on. Somebody on here said he was bulking up to be a deep snapper. He must be too good of a holder, or not good enough of a snapper to get the snapper job. I would **** my pants if he made a play this year.

Did you watch the bowl game? Fake field goal for a first down.

Mahoney was crazy good at that surprise offside kick. I bet we don't see that this year with the new kickers. I'm not really sure that's very teachable.
