Interesting article by Phil Steele - Games Favored vs. Games Won

"At SEC Media Days, Steve Spurrier mentioned that despite winning a school record 11 games last year he
jokingly said that he might not have done that great of a job since the Gamecocks were favored in 12 games last year.

This got me thinking about how many times a team has been favored, how many times they have suffered upset
losses and similarily how many times they have been a dog along with the number of upset wins they have pulled. I also
thought it would be interesting to look at the differential between the number of times a team was favored and their actual win/loss record."

Looks like KSU and ISU are the little dogs holding it down.

Re: Interesting article by Phil Steele - Games Favored vs. Games Won

Phil Steele was on the radio in the Bay Area talking about the local team (Cal, Stanford, SJSU) and the Pac-12. He was asked by the host about who he thought was a coach that always seems to have his team ready to play and got the most out of his team. Steele said CPR was the coach that did that the best. Said he has no idea how ISU had gone to two bowl games in the last 3 years. He said he expected us to win 4 or 5, but with Rhoads he wouldn't be surprised if he was wrong again and they went to a bowl.

It was nice hearing positive unsolicited talk about ISU out here.

and this is why i constantly worry about how long he will stay here. it seems as long as this continues, he will be sought after more and more by the big guns. hopefully he can prove to us and himself that he can win here and won't have to leave (unless he greedily simply wants more money that we cannot match).

It's not greedy if he deserves it.

Just like every cyclone fan, I am all for ISU winning despite being the underdog. These numbers seem to be a bit skewed for Iowa State though since most "experts" have us as the underdog for 90% of our games. I believe our history allows pundits to put less effort into our chances each game, allowing a larger margin for error in our favor with these stats. Just my opinion though......

Those "experts" are in Vegas and they make money there.

All good coaches have left ISU after finding some success. Rhoads would be a huge exception, I certainly do not expect that. DMac's biggest mistake was probably not taking a harder look at leaving after the 9-3 season - I believe it was TCU that was interested? Hopefully Rhoads has a Snyder type vision for ISU, but no matter what - if he gets a chance at a big time job - he will have left the program better than he found it and ISU stands a much better chance of landing a good coach that would be in position to continue his success. When was the last time a new coach was in position to continue the previous coaches succes at Iowa State - Criner?
