Re: Save the Town of Hamburg

I nearly bought a beautiful old home in Hamburg last April -- was going to renovate -- that was a close call.

Donated... one question... if the levee didn't exist would the town still be around? That one picture makes it look a lot like 5.6 million dollars for only saving a few houses and farm property, but the town would be fine anyway. Almost $4000 per person is what they are trying to raise.

Side note, that video is about the quality I would expect from a town of that size.

They(local farmers with the help of the core) put up that levee after the flooding already started. It defenatly saved the city.. not just a couple farms and homes... It also saved many big business's that should help out with the donations... IE Cargil, Manildra and a John Deere Dealer..

Re: Save the Town of Hamburg

so fema will help to rebuild a private dam on a lake so that people will have a lake for their vacation homes but the federal government won't do anything to help build a new levee for Hamburg. that is stupid if you ask me

Rebuilding the dam/lake is a better investment by the government. Property value = property taxes. Have you ever been to Hamburg? I haven't been in 30 years but it was a decrepit hole back then. And I know it hasn't rallied.

As a former hydrologist who used to work very closely in Hamburg floods, I can assure you it wouldn't. In fact, even with the levee system, it's still lucky the town exists. I've witnessed flooding within inches of topping the current levee system, and at that point it was very lucky the levees didn't give out. My personal opinion, but I feel if the town wants to guarantee its continued existence, it should move somewhere further uphill. The amount of tributaries colliding in this one area lends itself to tremendous flooding, and it's debatable whether the efforts put forth in saving the town are really worth it, especially when it's a repeating occurrence.

Grew up in Rock Port, MO (just south of the Burg). Sampled my first alkeehol at the Blue Moon. Great town and good looking women (as I'm sure cyhawkdmb can attest...)
