    Bears Reach Deal with Forte

Matt Forte and the Chicago Bears have reportedly agreed to terms on a four-year, $32 million contract, avoiding any risk of the Pro Bowl running back holding out to start the 2012 season.

The Bears and Forte had until 3 p.m. Monday to reach terms on a long-term deal and prevent Forte from being subjected to the franchise tag. The one-year franchise tender would have paid Forte $7.74 million this season.

Instead, the former second-round pick out of Tulane reportedly secured the long-term deal he desired, although the process was far from seamless, the Sun-Times and ESPN report.

The team’s original offer to Forte before last season included around $15 million guaranteed. Forte sought a deal that would put him in the company of Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson ($36 million guaranteed) and Tennessee’s Chris Johnson ($30 million) among the league’s highest-paid backs.

Nothing should surprise me regarding the Bears organization, but with all of the horrid backs they've have had since Payton, it never should have taken them that long to lock up one of the best backs they've had recently.

I would of let him played the next two seasons with the franchise tag. With his knee history, I don't think this deal will be worth it to the Bears.

I wouldn't have paid him that much and over that period of time. But I'm also not a fan of giving RB's big contracts.

Forte is a good back, but you gotta worry that he will get hurt and set the team back.

A lot of teams are content to ride it out and not pay backs that are injury prone.

He may be the best back they've had in a while, but he's not irreplacable.

I think both of you make very good points. I also think you have to look at each team situation individually instead of putting all RB's/teams in the same category. It wouldn't make sense for a lot of teams to give that much money. However, what he means to the team, along with the fact their window to win is now, they can't afford to have him unhappy. There are no more excuses for the Bears. I like the contract for him in this situation.

Re: Bears Reach Deal with Forte

I was thinking $24 mil for four years would of been a good deal. Makes me wonder what he was actually demanding. Don't mind them rewarding him for past performance however. Had some pretty productive years at minimum price. However he put up a lot of those numbers out of necessity since they had virtually no other reliable threats. Now that they have a legitimate number one receiver as well as some other threats on offense I hope they won't have to rely on him near as much.

Also, since he is 26, this contract take him up to 30 where they can either resign him for cheap or let him walk.

Most teams have learned their lesson with taking on RBs over 30.

4 years $24 million is well below market value, especially for someone with the numbers that he has. Market value for a number 1 running back is about $8-9 mil per season. That's right where Arian Foster, DeAngelo Williams, Marshawn Lynch, and Shady McCoy are all at with their recent deals. I would put Forte right in the middle of those guys, talent wise. Seems that the Bears got decent value to me.

Re: Bears Reach Deal with Forte

I don't get the injury concerns. Until 2011, Forte had never missed a start in his career, and knee sprains happen all the time.
