Nice job, Brent. CW can rest easy on vacation; CF is in good hands.

    Re: Monday Musings-Blum Edition

    With regard to the statement:

So what did we learn this summer? These would be the three major headlines in my book:
    .....
-Expect Naz Long to get serviceable minutes as a true freshman.

Not trying to be a troll or be argumentative, honestly trying to learn something here (my main sport is FB, only follow ISU BB cause it's ISU)...

How does one evaluate PTL vs real season? I thought I heard that Tavon Sledge did good in last year's, and I was pretty excited to see him from what I heard about the games, so I was disappointed how he turned out. Is there something different Naz did besides stats that makes someone optimistic? Is it still just an optimistic good guess and it could go the other way like Tavon? Obviously, PTL is about flash and dash, fundamentals be damned. I guess maybe Tavon had a pickup style skill set that didn't translate to real time.

Anyway, I'd like to learn more. TIA

Naz is more Big 12 ready than Sledge, I admit that I never watched sledge play in the CCL but I did watch Naz. Sledge (when he played) was out of control it seemed. Naz seems to keep his body movements in control. He is going to be a very good point guard for us.

That's a very fair and good question. Tavon was a great scorer in pick-up settings because he was faster than everyone, but it was always going to be an uphill battle in Big 12 play because of his size (5-8) and his unreliable jump-shot. Tavon was really good end-to-end, but struggled in the half-court and on defense. Those things don't get exposed in the Cap City League, but do in Big 12 play.

Naz is a legit 6-4 and seems to have a pretty consistent jump-shot. His size alone means he should be able to match-up on the defensive end. And his ball-handling and jumper won't hinder him on the offensive end. I'm not saying Naz will be an All-Big 12 guy right away, but he should be fine filling minutes at either guard spot when called upon.

Don't get excited, "serviceable" means like 4 minutes maybe.

My difference between Long and Sledge, from what I have seen:

Sledge will do whatever it takes and make whatever moves it takes for him to get the hoop and try to score.

Long will do whatever it takes and make whatever moves it takes for him, or his teammates, to get to the hoop and try to score.
