    Recommenations for airline tickets

What are you all using or recommending for airline tickets? In the past, I've had good results from Travelocity. We need to fly to San Fancisco in August before Southwest starts flying from Des Moines. In the past, we've flew from DM, Omaha, Mnpls, whatever the best deal given the time. Any better or other suggestions?

I use Orbitz to check rates, then purchase on the airline website. The airlines have greater responsibility to take care of you in a problem (e.g. delays that require rebooking) if you buy your ticket directly from them rather than through a wholesaler. It isn't nice to be on the bottom of the list when they are rebooking!

An even better idea is to try to build up some loyalty. Having status in an airline's frequent flyer club helps even more.

Have had better luck with this than Kayak recently. But they both do a good job. Then do a quick search on Southwest's and Allegiant's sites.

I just paid $380 to fly from DSM to SF on United. I usually fly Delta everywhere (I am obviously a big fan), but with Delta I had to go from DSM to Detroit to SF. With United you go through Denver.

+1 again. Use Kayak to find the cheapest fair (also search Southwest.com and Allegiantair.com since they keep their fares exclusively on their website). When you find the chepest fair, book on the airlines direct website only (for reasons stated in this thread), 99.9% of the time it will be the same price as the wholesalers and sometimes cheaper.

Now here is my own advice. If you can fly southwest, do it! They have no baggage fees or change fees. I was recently able to change the price of a flight from Chicago Midway to Cleveland from $280 to $200 thanks to southwest's free changes. I originally purchased my fare at $280 but kept checking southwest.com for the fare to go down. The fare then went down to $200 and I was able to change my flight so it would cost $200 instead of $280. The kicker is that the $80 difference comes back to me in points but its better than nothing. I fly them enough that if you do this for 3-4 flights, you will essentially get a free flight.

    Good luck!

AA - DSM-ORD-SFO in late August, Thursday - Sunday is $416.

That's darn good. Seems every ticket is now $400+ with lots of tickets $500+.

    Re: Recommenations for airline tickets

I heard on the local news last night that an airfare war has just started (at least between Southwest and American, others are likely to join). I'm not sure how soon Orbitz/Travelocity etc. get those reduced fares, but for now, I'd be checking the airline websites for the best prices.

    Re: Recommenations for airline tickets

My wife just spent a couple of days searching airlines' sites for tickets to Florida (Disney) in October. She got us round trip for $300 on United. I don't think she used any special site at all. Just kept hitting each arilines' site and pricing tickets.

    Re: Recommenations for airline tickets

Right now, on selected dates, you can fly from Des Moines to Honolulu with a stop in Las Vegas for $247 one way. That's a pretty good deal on allegiantair.com

As for general sites I use... orbitz or kayak are good starting points.

If you need a hotel for the night and don't have a reservation, Priceline can not be beat for last minute prices on hotels.

Kayak is great but I wish you could book through their site directly. They make the redirection to the airline's website pretty seamless, though.

They also have a great mobile app. I love that I can forward travel itineraries booked through my employer's system (which SUCKS) and have them re-formatted to open with the Kayak app.

I used travelocity recently and have no complaints. All of the sites have almost the exact same price.

Middle of the week is often a good time to buy. Mondays, Fridays, and Sundays usually aren't.
