    First Pregnancy

So my wife thinks she's pregnant, we are trying for our first, so we're hopeful. Anyways, the test was faded line which indicates some hormone is present. Just curious how soon your wives "knew"? Also any tips to prepare myself for a little one, seems crazy they just give you this little thing to take home. ;)

We need to have a talk and I don't think you are going to like what I have to say.

    Re: First Pregnancy

The best advice is to be yourself and do what you think is best. Every child is different. I was blessed to have an 'easy' baby for my first so I don't have much to offer for the other than...

Find what the baby likes/dislikes and always teach, even to a newborn. It will be frustrating at times, it will also be the best feeling in the world too. Don't worry too much... kids are resilient. And don't forget to have fun!

    Re: First Pregnancy

    Congratulations!!!!!! (maybe)

Usually she knew in a few weeks with morning sickness, and other signs.

There is no preparation. Your life totally changes; priorities, free time, fears, excitement, etc... But it is all worth it, and it is an awesome ride. Savor every new victory - sitting up, crawling, standing up, walking, first word, first sentence, etc..... And try to help with 60% of the work.....your wife is going to go through 8+ sucky months.....you owe it to her.

Nothing will change your priorities and perspective more than bringing a child into the world.

    Congratulations assuming she is!

    Re: First Pregnancy

Ditto the priorities changing. We were extremely lucky that our first was very easy and now is a very good (and bossy, keeps them in line) big sister to our other 2 girls.
I remember the first test my wife took. Very faint line as well so we called the company to find out and they said if there is any evidence of the line whatsoever then my bullets hit their mark. Its funny that less than a month in to each child, you quickly forget what it was ever like to not have kids.

    Re: First Pregnancy

The fading lines could be two things:
    - an evaporation line (that sometimes happens, it's kind of a false positive); or
    - an early positive.

I'd test again in a few days. Use the first morning urine, the hCG concentration is highest at that time. You can call your OB/GYN to get a beta done, but some of them refuse to see you until X number of weeks. Those blood tests are more reliable than pee tests, though.

Is she having other symptoms? My first pregnancy symptom has always been really weird, vivid dreams - and that's pretty common. Lots of women get breast tenderness. Nausea usually waits until about six or seven weeks to show up, and not everyone gets it. (Lucky bastards.)

Make sure she's taking her folic acid every morning, this is the time when it's most important.

And lastly - congrats and good luck!

I think I knew before my wife. When she got real prissy and emotional we figured she needed to take a test.

    Re: First Pregnancy

Be ready for anything and try and get as much "stuff" done as early as possible.

My wife was due June 12th and she had our son on April 27th. As you might have gathered, that was earlier than we planned.

Besides just being early we were in the middle of some minor home renovations and the babies room was torn apart. It made it ten times harder to try and get that completed once he was actually born, and specially in our situation because we were spending lots of time at the NICU. His room literally got completed hours before he came home.

So, anything you can have done early is a positive.

    Re: First Pregnancy

The biggest piece of advice I can give is to never let them them sleep in your bed. Put them in a crib or cradle from the first day you bring them home. We've had friends that can't get their kids to sleep by themselves for over a year because they didn't start as a baby. Even if you have to put the cradle in your room just teach them to sleep alone from day 1.
