Pioneer Hi-Bred to Become DuPont Pioneer

One of Des Moines oldest business names, Pioneer Hi-Bred, is being changed to reflect the corporate ownership of parent DuPont.
The name “DuPont Pioneer” will be phased in gradually, first to growers and suppliers and then to the public with a new corporate logo that will maintain the familiar trapezoid border, Pioneer spokeswoman Jane Slusark said Wednesday.
She said “the name change reflects the further integration of DuPont’s food and agriculture businesses with the repositioning of its seed business to DuPont Pioneer. The move signals DuPont’s continued commitment to growing its presence in the food and agriculture sectors.”
DuPont has owned the 83-year-old Pioneer Hi-Bred since 1999, when it paid $7.7 billion for the 80 percent of the company it didn’t own. Since then the seed company has been known as “Pioneer Hi-Bred; a DuPont Business.”
Pioneer was founded in 1926 by Henry A. Wallace land a group of Des Moines investors to produce and market hybrid seed corn, of which Wallace was prominent among early developers. The company was known for a decade as Hi-Bred Corn Co., then added the “Pioneer” name in 1936.

Terrible move and the Pioneer people HATE it. Next to John Deere, Pioneer is probably THE most recognizable name in agriculture. Why would you mess with that??

Not saying it's good but...DuPont has a pretty big name too. Just saying.

Yes, but if they "Monsanto-up" Pioneer, it'll **** off a lot of seed buyers.

    Already happening.

While on live TV, Ford used a vulgar term to describe a private part of the female anatomy, adding that he was “happily married” and “got more than enough to eat at home.”

Are there Pioneer people anymore? Haven't they really been DuPont people since 1999?

As long as pioneer still has the superior seed, which they will, then nobody is going to say a word. I know I wont.

Thought I'd read that a couple of weeks ago.
Interesting that it's in a "blog" instead of a real news story.

Can't figure out if you work for Dupont Pioneer or plant it? "superior seed" is quite a bold statement and compliment for any customer to express. I'm not that satisfied with any product I chose to spend my hard-earned money on.

While I'd like my customer to be that satisfied with my seed, I'm a little more humble.... and realistic.

I guess they have good beans for a carpet, paint and teflon company.

Re: Pioneer Hi-Bred to Become DuPont Pioneer

I know alot about Pioneer and can tell you that until around 2009, DuPont really didn't get too involved in Pioneer's business. In 2009, when the economy went to heck, DuPont discovered they had a hidden gem in Pioneer and that Pioneer was their loan division making good money while the bottom was falling out the rest of DuPont's businesses. At that point, DuPont took a much more "involved" approach to Pioneer. There has been alot of turnover and the DuPont culture is pretty much very apparent throughout Pioneer now.

Which is nice in a way because DuPont is bringing in a more "Professional" atmosphere at least to its seed dealers. About time.
