    Some Jack Trice related questions:

    Hi all:

Doing some research on Jack Trice and Iowa State's football team of that era. Hoping some of you can help with these questions. Thanks in advance:

1.) When did we start using away uniforms? Would the 1923 team have had more than one type of uniform? Did the team have numbers on the back of these jerseys? (For reference, here is a 1930 picture with a hint of rear numbers.)

2.) Iowa State's own trademark website is ambiguous on this point, but in football, was the ISC trademark being used in 1923 or were they using the Ames mark? The trademark website said usage of the ISC mark has been traced to 1930, but may have been earlier. The plaque on the Jack Trice statue indicates the game was Ames vs. Minnesota, so I suspect the mark was Ames.

    vs

But was it really? It seems Ames and ISC were interchangeable for much of the early 1900's. Here is an 1908 image of an athletic field showing an ISC mark in the bottom left corner. I think it was added after the fact, but when?

I remember seeing the use of just an 'A' patch in athletics as well. In fact I think they have one in Clydes on campus IIRC.

Also, Parks Library has several items in its 'Special Collections' that may help your research.

Re: Some Jack Trice related questions:

Kind of off topic, but I've been thinking of acting on this. The "cyclones" name came from a newspaper article...read the history if you want the full story....

Anyway, it appears (I will not be held liable for you blowing $59 or $99, I haven't done all the research) that you might be able to buy a reprint of the page that contained that article.

It was in the Chicago Tribune, September 29th, 1895, page 6.

I think if you go here:

Chicago Tribune Store Chicago Tribune Page Reproduction

and put that in the order box, you should be able to get that page. I am skeptical, so I was going to drop them an e-mail, and maybe see if they would do a bulk discount if we got a bunch of CF'ers to jump in, but hadn't gotten to it.

Thanks for this. While I knew the origin story already, I purchased the article image via PDF and was able to read the whole article.

Also, no one knows when we started using away jerseys in football? With some of the supplied links, it appears ISC sometimes had numbers on the uniforms, but it doesn't appear consistent. Did Jack Trice have a number? Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far.

Actually leave the couch to go to a library to do research? That's crazy talk.

To be fair, I have been in the special collections room many times, but currently live in Los Angeles. Thus I am relying on you good people!

Somewhere on CF there is a mention of Trice's jersey number. Was it 29?
