It's a hell of a good time, you will be fine with intermediate and you will have a good time. If it's your first time, probably shouldn't go for advanced. Where are you going?

    Re: white water rafting question

I went for the first time about 5 or 6 years ago. I went with 2 other people that had done WW before. I did the full day trip of big horn canyon and the Royal Gorge. At lunch after big horn they put a couple more guides on the boat with the 3 of us. We had a great time it was a blast. One of the guides even rode the bull part of the way through the gorge.

If it is a group of all first timers they may not let you go through something like the Gorge though.

I am going on the Arkansas river. we are going to do half day trips, so I thought doing an intermediate and an advanced would be fun. however being new, maybe two days of intermediate would work out just as well.

Check the water flow, if it's low you may want to do advanced. Likely though for first timer, intermediate would be good.

Yeah, this. Water flow was too low so it was a lot like canoeing, which is still fun, but not really what we signed up for.

    This.

I did the Arkansas last Tuesday and our group was disappointed. Colorado had an early spring too so the snow melt happened very early and rain has been minimal, so many of the rivers/streams are very low. I recommend calling the company and getting a clear explanation of what they will be expecting prior to reserving. You may want to move up in class due to the lack of water. I wish we had. I didn't make the reservations, however, lesson learned for next time. We had a good time either way, however, it was a float ride in my opinion...i.e nothing heart pounding by any stretch.

P.s. We used Buffalo Joe's out of Buena Vista.

Been rafting down the Arkansas River in Colorado twice. Was launched from our raft, along with 3 others in our group, the first time. Scary as hell. If it happens to you, get on your back and stick your feet out of the water asap. The only other thing i can say is...get by the Shark Tooth unscathed and you're good to go.

Thanks for the responses. We are doing one half day Thurs (12:30-3:30). I was wondering if we should do another half day Friday or try and find some other activities around the area...like biking some of the area and trails, etc?

This is where I went, too.

I would also probably stick with intermediate classes, but if the water level is low, that definitely could be boring. Do they have a contact number you could call and ask?

Yes, I have a contact number. I booked my trip last night, but just for one day. I always like a challenge and they said the advanced wouldn't be as challenging because the water levels were lower this year than last year. I might just book for one day and then make the decision on booking the second day after I see how fun it is and how hard the interm. class is.

    Re: white water rafting question

I've rafted the Arkansas 7-8 times. My best advice is to stay out of the water. It's cold and will make you cold the rest of the day. Beyond that, go for the hardest trip they have available. The water is low.

I've done the Gorge several times and agree with what others are saying. Except the getting wet part - I highly encourage you to get in the water at some point. Just wear wicking/fast dry materials (i.e. not cotton).
