Iowa Regents Break 40 Year Gun Ban

    Link

Back in April or May we had a long thread on this.

I am in favor of this. If the officers are putting there lives on the line then they should be able to protect themselves and more importantly the campus.

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everyone.

But then one day, someone would pick up a board with a nail in it. And then someone else would get a board with a bigger nail...

As a gun owner and hunter I can disagree and say that would not be sweet.

I am for the campus security having armed weapons.

Not to be rude, but calling them campus security is insulting. The are certified police officers and have the required training that all other police officers in the state must have. They are all currently certified to carry firearms and pass qualifications twice a year.

Now, if they'd reinstate the CITIZEN's right to bear arms on campus THAT would be sweet.

Re: Iowa Regents Break 40 Year Gun Ban

With what happened on the West Virginia campus earlier this year, I definitely agree the Campus Police should be able to carry guns.

If I was negotiating the right to bear arms though, I would have taken away their ability to write speeding tickets for going 4 mph over the speed limit on campus.

As long as beer comes in longneck bottles people will always have access to weapons (grab bottle by neck, smack bottom of bottle on bar to create sharp edges, thrust sharp edges at nearest person)

I think it's important to point out that 10 years ago they were "campus security" or the Department of Public Safety (DPS) and they were not certified police officers. (at least under my understanding)

So, forgive us if some of us old fogies are skeptical of this, it's just because DPS was completely incompetent when we were in school. As long as they are certified and trained, I have no problem with this whatsoever.

The only thing I'll say about this is don't confuse DPS with the "Parking Nazis." The "Parking Nazis" are just a bunch of students on a power trip who get their jollies from writing up tickets. DPS is essentially an "unarmed" police force. 10 years or so ago I remember the raging debate by the regents was whether it was a good idea to equip the officers with tasers to defend themselves and the question by us students was why they didn't have guns in the first place.

    How times change...
