    Iowa second-ranked state for wrestling

Intermat posted this "analysis", picking the top 5 wrestling states in the country. Not a particularly detailed analysis, but I know you can all guess who was ranked #1. Three to 5 were interesting; not sure I agree with the order, but there is no question we rank right up there in interest in wrestling - at the high school and college levels.

    I would guess.

    1.Penn
    2.Iowa
    3.Virginia
    4.Oklahoma
    5.NJ

Taking population into account and weighting high school a bit heavier than college.

Ohio needs to be on the list somewhere.

Surprised that Ohio is that high. Are they gaining on us? Or did we recently pass them because of having many years ago? I don't know the history, but thought we would be #1 with both Iowa State and EIU being here.

It costs members $34.99/year to find that out?

That is number of All Americans based on what high school they went to, not what college they went to. So that means per capita Iowa is far and above anybody else, but Pennsylvania and Ohio both have much larger populations, so can do better overall (though Ohio hasn't caught us yet).

When it comes to college no other state comes close by size, California and Pennsylvania are the only states with more college teams. We have three D-1 programs in ISU, UNI, and Iowa. We also have numerous lower tier opportunities. 24 total post-high school wrestling teams. California and Pennsylvania are the only states with more.

    College Wrestling Programs in Iowa:
    Iowa(DI), Iowa State(DI), Northern Iowa(DI), Upper Iowa(DII), Buena Vista(DIII), Central(DIII), Coe(DIII), Cornell(DIII), Dubuque(DIII), Loras(DIII), Luther(DIII), Simpson(DIII), Wartburg(DIII), Briar Cliff(DIII), Grandview(NAIA), Morningside(NAIA), Waldorf(NAIA), William Penn(NAIA), Ellsworth(JUCO), Iowa Central(JUCO), Iowa Lakes(JUCO), Iowa Western(JUCO), NIAC(JUCO)

Of course, the downside of all that opportunity for us is that a lot of the "not quite Big XII/Big 10" type guys that could provide great depth in the room as walk-ons instead go to smaller schools and become D-III national champions.

    Good point Jukoda.

I was hoping someone would point out the per capita figures.

Population of each state is as follows:

    Pennsylvania: 12,742,886
    Ohio: 11,544,951
    Iowa: 3,062,309

In my opinion Iowa should be number 1 based upon Ohio and Pennsylvania being 4 times as large.

I am also glad you raised the point about population because it is a valid one - but IMO, not the only one. Hockey is my first love, and some states have produced an inordinate number of NHLers, relative to their population. Or look at nations and the number of NHLers coming from Sweden, as an example. Are they a better hockey country than we are - or Canada?

I think per capita production is valid - and it works in our favor here - but I also think number of AAs per high school participant should also be considered - don't know if the numbers are available - this would distinguish quality versus quantity.

Either way, I posted this hoping Iowans would step forward. Intermat used a number of criteria - AAs was one of these - but overall, considering subjective and objective criteria, I still think PA is right up there. But IMM, IA is numero uno.

I agree that overall is still valid - the recruiting grounds in Pennsylvania and Ohio were likely a big part of why Sanderson is at Penn State right now. He shares that whole area with only Ohio State, while in Iowa there is a smaller number of wrestlers that are being recruited by ISU, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Mizzou.

Thanks Judoka. Know I think I understand the ratings better. As I recall, when Sanderson left, he said that he thought Pennsylvania was the best place to recruit in the country and that was a big part of why he was making the move.

We are falling behind. Name Iowa native champs in the past 10 years.

    Paulson
    McDonough
    Borschel
    Cliff Moore

    And?
