Wonder how long it takes for them to offer him his job back before they knew the story would leak this much.

Great call on his part. Screw the job, it was only paying $8.25 anyway. I'm sure a guy with his initiative can do much better.

Yeah so what was his alternative in this case. Watch them die? Call someone else to go save them while watching them die?

There is such a lack of common sense in today's world. Big businesses lack it often, but government is by far the worst offender.

The person who should be fired is the one doing the firing. Common sense has to come in to play at some point.

I'm guessing that through this the lifeguard will make some money somehow.

1500 ft away is a little more than a quarter mile away. That is a heck of a distance away from his beach. Not saying he shouldn't have done what he did, but it wasn't like it was right next to his post.

Obviously, the company concern is if he leaves his post at the beach and goes a quarter mile+ away to help another swimmer....what happens if someone gets in trouble in the water at the beach area where he was responsible.

That's the catch 22 in the situation. I would imagine a lot of these types of policies are insurance company mandated. In the sue happy world we live it this is what it has all come down to.

That said the kid did what most people in the same situation would do, and I can't fault him for that. If he doesn't get his job back, he will be offered a better one from this media exposure.

Yeah I realize that after I reread it. I was skimming it to see what it was all about. He's better without that company. I bet he even gets a couple job offers cause of what he did.

Obviously everyone stops swimming and watches the lifeguard rescue the swimmer.

I think the other concern is that if he tries to save the swimmer and dies in the process, the company is not really liable for his death because he was out of his area.

What if that person started out in the protected area and drifted or was carried out?

Call the base on your radio and tell them you are heading out for a rescue, and they can send somebody to cover your area. If the lifeguards aren't equipped with a means to quickly call the base, the city should fire that company immediately.
