Re: CF Exclusive Conversation: With Courtney Messingham

CF: Do you guys have some sort of a date in mind as to when you want to make the big quarterback decision or is the competition going to dictate when that decision is made?
CM: We’ll just kind of let it ride. I think that every day, you kind of grade and evaluate them every day. You have scrimmage days. You kind of let those days add up and those practices add up. At some point if we feel like it is necessary, we’ll make a decision. My biggest concern has always been the entire offense. If they feel comfortable with both guys then I am not nervous about making a decision right now. If I start feeling like the entire offense is losing confidence in one or the other or they don’t feel comfortable with both or either being the starter, then you’ve got to make it a little bit quicker. But as long as the guys around them play to their best ability, then I’m fine with letting the thing ride as long as we need to to make a good decision.

I found this interesting, I thought last year Barnett looked better than Jantz, and also earned the starting spot not only because Jantz was injured, but also because it seemed as if the team trusted Barnett more. Did anyone else see this? They seemed to play harder for Barnett.

It could also have to do with the fact the 2 of Barnett's wins were against maybe the two worst teams on the schedule, and the other one was against one of the worst defenses on the schedule.

Don't get me wrong, I am more in the Barnett camp than not, but just playing devil's advocate.

He also had a win against Ok st, and he also wasn't great during that win.

    Nice interview Chris

I'm very excited and a little nervous to see a Coach Mess offense. Mostly excited!

This is irrelevant to the QB controversy but I have to say, I'm pretty sure every D-1 coach in the country would take the output JB and the offense gave on this night any week of the season. I know there were some trouble spots because he wasn't perfect but let's put it into perspective.

3rd best passing game in school history -376
2nd best total yards game in school history - 460
Only D-1 QB to throw for 375 and rush for over 75 in a single game last season
Only QB to beat that "crappy" OSU defense in 2011

I would say he did just fine. Especially for a redshirt freshman. BTW, he won the Ray Scott award for Offensive MVP as voted by the team. Can the kid catch a break from his own fan base. You would think he played at Iowa or something.

I watched the game, and actually I take back what I said, it was more of our receivers fault, but in the end it doesn't matter because we had an awesome win. My point was is that the team seems to like Barnett and they play harder for him.

Not trying to derail this thread but does anyone think that Tom Herman was encouraged to look around? I realize that Ohio State is a great program but he is now Co-offfensive coordinator with Ed Warinner AND he is under a coach that clals his own offensive plays.

Does not seem like great career advancement.

Going from Iowa State to Ohio State is a significant advancement in an offensive coordinator's career no matter how you try to spin it.

Great interview, Chris. The more I read/ hear about Messingham, the more excited I get about him running the ISU offense. CPR and staff are doing an amazing job at making our program relevant.

My feeling is that SJ will have a shot if he can control/contain his "spaz" tendenecies, but if not JB is the clear number 1. My biggest fear is that they let it go too long and the guys start taking sides and then we get team descension. I don't think CPR @ staff would let that happen... Hoping one of the two step's up and positions themselves as the clear number 1, but something tells me it's not going to be that easy.

Messingham sure sounds like a practical guy. Count me as another who is excited to see what he brings to the table. Maybe Rhoads and tom Herman weren't as good together as Rhoads and mess. Two Iowa guys about the same age with similar mentalities.

Great point CW. In this day and age, the writing on the resume is more important than the outcome on the field. Iowa State is a very good stop for guys who are up and coming. CPR had ISU on his resume before getting the DC jobs at Pitt and Auburn. Chiz had it on his resume (including a 5-19 record) and still got the HC job at Auburn.
