    Kansas State Analysis

    Scoring Offense
    KSU: 38.8 ppg (5th)
    ISU: 16.6 ppg (12th)

    Scoring Defense
    KSU: 21.5 ppg (4th)
    ISU: 32.0 ppg (11th)

    Pass Offense
    KSU: 280.8 ypg (4th)
    ISU: 200.4 ypg (11th)

    Pass Defense
    KSU: 220.5 ypg (3rd)
    ISU: 232.0 ypg (8th)

    Rush Offense
    KSU: 141.4 ypg (9th)
    ISU: 127.8 ypg (10th)

    Rush Defense
    KSU: 127.1 ypg (7th)
    ISU: 131.8 ypg (8th)

    Total Offense
    KSU: 422.1 ypg (8th)
    ISU: 322.2 ypg (12th)

    Total Defense
    KSU: 347.6 ypg (5th)
    ISU: 363.8 ypg (7th)

The game is going to come down to the ISU offense. If we can score 20+ points, we have a chance to win. Both teams have a similar rushing offense. KSU likes to throw the ball more. If we can limit the yards through the air, we have an even better shot at winning.

A couple more tidbits: KSU is the most penalized team in the B12 at almost 80 yards per game.

KSU only converts 37.3% of their 3rd downs.

They have only allowed 6 sacks all year.

I'm afraid this game will once again come down to special teams.

And their special teams are good. Returned both a punt and a kickoff for touchdowns against Texas.

    Re: Kansas State Analysis

    NOW (2007)

Turnover margin tells a big tale also. A turnover is worth about 35 yards or a net punt. We were -7 last year. We are already -8 this year.

A little known stat is net yardage on kickoffs. Our kickoffs are very short compared to Them so the decrement is closer to 25 yards difference in kickoffs or 4 kickoffs an average game for a loss of 100 yards a game.

We average 18.5 yards from the spot where the ball is kicked and give up 24.8 yards or decrement of 6.3 yards.

Punt returns is now 3.9 yards for us to 7.8 yards for them or decrment of 3.9 yards.

We however lead in sacks 16 Us -14 Them this year.

Typical 2007 game : Offense /Defense is decrement of 40 yards, Special teams lose 100 yards a game on kickoffs and 5 yards on punt returns, interception/fumble returns lose 15 ypg, penalties gain 10 ypg, per grand sum of decreemnt of 150 ypg to our opponents and yet we only lose by 15 points per game. Each additional 15 yards of decrement play allowed the opponent one more point.

    THEN (2006)

Last year under Dan we were outscored 18.8 to 30.8 or difference of 12.0 points per game.

We had 315 yards total offense to 392 yards total defense or a difference of 77 yards. Includes only 101 yards offensive rushing a game. Poor overall.

Kick returns was ISU - 18.4 yard per kick Them - 19.4. Okay.
Punt returns was ISU - 10.6 Them - 8.4. Good.
Turnovers: By Us - 14 By Them 21 Or -7 Fair to poor.
Red Zone Success Us-78% Them - 87% Okay.
    Fieldgoals: Us - 8/11 Them - 13/18 Not bad.
Penalities: Us - 36 ypg Them - 58 ypg Good.
    3rd % Conversion: Us - 39% Them - 45% Okay.
Sacks By Us -24. By Them -38 poor.
    TDs: Us-29 Them - 47 Bad.
Intercept By Us -6 By Them -12 Poor.
Interception return Average Us - 6 y/int Them 17 y/int or decrement of 11 yard per interception Poor.
Fumbles: By Us - 8 By Them - 9 Okay.

Typical 2006 game Offense+ defense -80 yards plus -20 yards for turnovers plus 20 yards for penalities gain plus special teams were a wash in 2006 for a total of 80 yards in the hole allowing the opponent 12 more points to the oppponent. Each additional decrement of 6.5 yards allowed the opponent one more point in 2006.

    ANALYSIS

We are losing worse this year (15 points differential in 07 to 12 points in 06).

However, fix the Special teams and Turnovers Margin to what we had last year and we would be winning some of these games. It is the kickoffs, and as a consequence, field position that is clobbering our team. Our kickoffs may be hurting our defense more than our missed fieldgoals is hurting the offense. That's all.

Until you realize that those stats include the skull****ings Texas and Texas Tech gave us - games we have improved quite a bit since.

    Re: Kansas State Analysis

Even more break down of stats (sorry for the duplicates, but I was trying to do this somewhat fast)

Take special note of the stats that involve field position (reaffirming previous post - including 3rd Down Def Eff, Red Zone Effic, etc) and the stat that stuns me: time of possession. It really, REALLY shows you how inept we've been at scoring. Stunning. (PS. if one of our teams were leading the conference, I left the 2nd place team as a basis of comparison)
