    Fourth Trip Ideas

I'm looking for some good suggestions for my wife and I. We both have off until next Monday and are needing a vacation. Anyone have some good ideas within a day or two drive? Oh, and we are wanting to keep it cheap!

    Re: Fourth Trip Ideas

My favorite place to road trip to is definitely Estes Park, CO but I'm not sure if it is impacted by the fires. Some other outdoors type places would be South Dakota out near the badlands and Mt. Rushmore area or else the Lewis & Clark lake are is pretty cool. Lake Okoboji is closer to central IA. If you are looking for more of an urban experience KC and Chicago probably got some good things going on. Also Branson, MO if you are into that kind of thing. I love Estes Park though as it is a charming city and there is endless entertainment in Rocky Mountain National Park. They usually have quite a bit going on for the 4th of July.

I just googled Estes, and it looks like it is being affected :( I have been to Branson a couple times, and had some fun there. Thanks for the ideas, I am definitely going to check out Estes Park out sometime in the near future!

I second this. Canal Park in Duluth, Betty's Pies at Two Harbors, Stay at Grand Superior Lodge and or Blue Fin Bay, Don't miss World's best Doughnuts in Grand Marais early in the morning. Oh almost forgot the stop in Knife River for smoked fish at Russ Kendal's. Many State Parks along the way for short hikes. Enjoy!

You may want to check about Duluth. They may still be affected by the floods that hit the area this last week.

    Re: Fourth Trip Ideas

Duluth is getting more rain tonight, so I would certainly call ahead to see what is left up there.
Basically the entire midwest is going to be smoking hot this week, so i would recommend heading north to the Wisconsin Dells or if you are up for a longer drive Check out Mackinac Island, MI.

they are fine and open for business. i get emails from their tourism office.

If you do this trip and stop at Russel Kendalls fish shop buy two containers of smoked salmon pate and some crackers. You will have the first one eaten within 20 miles.

Stop at Goose Berry Falls and Split Rock Light house.

In Grand Marais get a skizzle at Worlds best donuts, Pizza at Sven and Ollies, Bloody Marys at the Gunflint Tavern and dinner at the Angry Trout

If you have never been to the Northshore you can thank me later

Also go up the Gunflint trail and get a malt and lunch at Trail Center

If you want close and simple. Why not Kansas City? I am sure you could find a great deal on a hotel somewhere near by. Between food, shopping and some great museums. I personally love the WWI and have heard great things about the steamboat museum.

    Re: Fourth Trip Ideas

You can help me move in this weekend. We have an extra room so it would be sort of like a vacation...

In all seriousness, I second Duluth and Grand Marais. I also would say Kansas City, but with the All-Star game being in town, its going to be pretty busy this weekend.
