Football Play Off = Big 10 Demise?

Ran across this really interesting article.

Sharp: College football's playoff system will hurt Big Ten ? USATODAY.com

Basically says Big 10 and Notre Dame lose on this deal and Big 12 and SEC win. Funny they don't even mention the Pac 10 or anybody else?

Re: Football Play Off = Big 10 Demise?

The Southeastern Conference has had at least one team in the final regular-season top four in 11 of the BCS's 14 years.

    The Big 12 is 10-for-14.

The Big Ten has had a team in the final-four rankings only six times in 14 years.

Notre Dame has no final-four rankings.
This says all you need to know about where CFB champions will come from, the Big 12 and SEC. Toss Oregon and USC in there and you likely have your four teams picks for the foreseeable future.

Good article. Exactly what I thought when I heard it announced. Don't know how Slive and Neinas/Bowlsby got the B1G and Pac-12 to agree to a non-championship play-off, but it will definitely work in the B12/SEC's favor if current trends continue.

I still can't believe how we went from being on life support after this last year to sitting in possibly the best postition we could. Funny how things work out in the end.

Selection committee will have people from all regions/conferences and programs like Mich, Ohio St, Neb and Penn St will get the benefit of the doubt often. They are money makers. The Big 10 will be just fine. It's top team will be in the playoffs often.

It further cements them as the 3rd best football conference, and there's nothing wrong with that.

Most real college football fans have seen that as a clearly developing fact for a few decades, this playoff will simply shine more light on that reality than media based on markets does.

43% of the time is often? I don't think this selection committee will be any MORE biased towards the B1G than the previous polls which helped shape the BCS rankings.

At least in previous years the B1G could still hang its hat on getting it's team into two BCS bowls by virtue of their TV presence and ticket sales. Getting shut out of the play-off year after year will be a major blow to their reputation.

It's about money and football quality.

Early on they forgot about the football part...the irrational days when the ACC was being talked about as a "power 4 football conference".

Turns out football quality is pretty important along with TV sets.

Re: Football Play Off = Big 10 Demise?

The Big 10 will be just fine if they adjust to this. If they continue to act like the snobby rich kid who feels like everybody owes them the world and the way they do things should be the way everyone else does things, they will fall into downward spiral of constant mediocreness.

For what its worth, I feel like the Big Ten adding a 12th team and getting a conference championship game was a huge step forward for them.

Wonder if this gives some serious traction to the Notre Dame to Big 12 rumors? Still can't decide if them joining would be a plus for the conference? Suspect they won't want to share kinda like Texas.

I love that article. Ive been saying for a long time that if college football ever gets a playoff, the big 10 is screwed. So its nice to see it in print!!

Selection committee will favor the Big Ten more than the BCS did, but not radically.

The BCS was 33% computers and the Big Ten teams were almost universally ranked higher by voter polls than computer formulas.

It's not a radical change, but selection committee is a moderate win for the Big Ten and a moderate lose for the Big 12. Just looking at how polls and computer polls almost always work out. If everyone gets on the same page with 8 or 9 conference games it'll be less of a change, but the human voter bias will always favor Big Ten somehow.

The fact that you're even pondering that question is ridiculous. In short...yes, it would be a plus.
