re: what was the top upset

I wasn't sure if this was English or not so I had to read this several times over.

To answer your series of run-on questions...my favorite upset of all time was when Gene Chizik defeated the commemorative coin. Never before had such an ISU football coach dominated fake collector currency in such a short time.

This was the greatest ISU upset (or "top up set") of all time.

re: what was the top upset

Probably going to need for this question. Since a lot of people are probably going to say the OSU victory, I'm going to argue for the 2009 Nebraska victory. I will start off by saying that it was a fluke, but it was just amazing to see the defense force or what could the Nebraska offense do to lose the ball again. It's funny looking back and thinking if only Nebraska would have gone a field on first and goal they would have won. This victory also laid the foundation for what ISU football has become and where it is headed. In addition, the win also legitimized Rhoads as a head coach, and we as fans got to see how proud he is be the football coach at ISU.

I read it (or pronounced in my head) like in BoM, when they say upstate (oop-state)

re: what was the top upset

Ranking those three wins from least probable to most probable:

    1. 1992 Nebraska
    2. 2009 Nebraska
    3 2011 Okie Liet

'09 Nebraska was way inferior to '11 OSU, but the fact we had no Arnaud/Robinson and the flukiness of the turnovers means I had to put it ahead of last year.

As far as 1992 goes, I think for the younger folk it is hard to fully understand how horrible ISU was at the time and how incredible Nebraska was at the time. Even look at their previous two games before ISU in that season by beating #8 Colorado 52-7 and #13 Kansas 49-7.

I was at that 1992 game and it was great. The Nebraska offensive lineman were walking to the line of scrimmage shaking their heads in the 2nd half because they couldn't open up a hole against the ISU defense. You could tell they knew they were beaten that day.

re: what was the top upset

Purely upset? No way does anything compare to '92. That was a game I went to, fully expecting to see Nebraska put up at least 50 points to our 0.

'09 was great, but that was far from a great Nebraska team ISU was playing.

'11 with OSU, Unbelievable game Great team in OSU. Did wonders for our exposure as a program, but honestly, going into that game, i felt ISU had a chance to at least play with them. As said above, I don't know if the younger generations really have any concept of how bad ISU was in the early '90s. In '92 we were a bad program on the decline. I don't remember the publication, but I do remember seeing us ranked at 108th out of 108 Div 1 teams the next year. I remember thinking my senior year, "It's not about weather or not we can beat UNI, but weather or not we can keep it close.

Nebraska had been and obviously would continue to be for a few more years, one of the best programs in the country back in '92, us beating them that year was pretty much as inconceivable as Drake beating them at that time. It just shouldn't have happened. And that's the big difference. We didn't belong on the same field in '92. '09 and '11 I feel we actually had decent teams.

    Iowa State...
    *3-6 (1-4 Big 8) coming in.
*3 wins to that point were against teams that finished a combined 6-27 on the season.
    *17-point home loss to UNI.
*Gave up a 47-21 lead in a 50-47 home loss to Kansas.
*Lost a Thursday night ESPN game at a sub-.500 K-State team.

    Nebraska...
*Came in 4-0 in the Big 8 with a total score of 190-38 in those games.
*Curbstomped top-10 CU and top-15 KU (as noted above) in back-to-back weeks.

Didn't the t-shirt after the game read: "Proof that God exists - 19-10"?

re: what was the top upset

The Marv Seiler game is the biggest upset and the others aren't even in the same category. The difference between the have's (Nebby) and the have nots (ISU) was far greater at that time, to put it in perspective, Nebraska only lost 1 more game the next 3 years.
