That might be one of the most confusing things I have ever looked at. I don't understand how they came about those rankings.

    Re: College Football Homefield Advantage

Yeah, there was no real explanation beyond, "We calculated the list. Here it is." The author suggests that some teams may get as much as a 9 point advantage, yet they fail to give an estimated advantage for each school.

Without information on how the rankings were made, I bet our high ranking has more to do with being bad on the road than having a particularly large home field advantage.

Love the article and that is a great subtle burn on SEC fans. I get into a bunch of bar arguments when I argue that basketball teams that play at high elevations like Colorado and Wyoming struggle more on the road than opposing teams struggle at Colorado or Wyoming court.

    Re: College Football Homefield Advantage

Here's how off the wall these rankings are.
    Out of 120:
    #1: Oklahoma
    #2: Wisconsin
    #7: Houston
    #10: Troy
    #25: Iowa State
    #33: Iowa
    #63: Ohio State
    #96: Florida
    #100: Texas
    #106: Alabama
    #116: Duke
    #120: Navy

They have good and bad teams all over the board. I think they just threw darts at a map blindfolded to get these rankings.

    Re: College Football Homefield Advantage

"Remember that homefield advantage compares performance against expected scores at home AND on the road to quantify the value of playing at home."

So basically an algorithm that takes in data from Vegas and possible other factors like location(elevation) and conference alignment(ref bias)(those were examples given in article).

Obviously, since we don't have the code or the statistics behind it, we can't verify it's accuracy or legitimacy. Some more off season fodder. No reason to get too carried away.

Wait, in the MBB one, we're like 130 spots behind Iowa? Yea, that makes total sense.

Home field advantage has little to do with whether the team is good or bad. It has more to do with HOW good and HOW bad they are relative to being on the road vs at home.

I realize that, but I listed some teams that are always good at home and always good on the road. I also listed some teams that suck no matter where they play. And they are all scattered throughout the rankings.

They might suck no matter where they play(Kansas), but statistically there might be quite a difference. Since those kind of stats weren't provided, our own analysis can't proceed. But that is no different than say any of the computers used in the BCS rankings.
