    Des Moines Area advice

Fanatics, there is a possibility that my wife may be accepting a position in Indianola and I might be transferring to my employers Des Moines office. We are both originally from Minnesota and have been living in Waterloo the last 3 years, so my knowledge of the area is not that great. We are not sure if we would live in Indianola or try to find a suburb towards the south of Des Moines to try and somewhat split the difference. It is likely we'd probably be renting for the time being and then trying to buy a house in the next 1-2 years. Any advice you guys can throw my way as far as towns/neighborhoods to look at or avoid is appreciated. Thanks.

Norwalk would probably be a good place to look. Not sure what the rental market is like there, though.

The two closest "suburbs" to Indianola would have to be Norwalk and Carlisle. Neither are acually suburbs, as they are well outside Des Moines city limits, but they are closer to town than Indianola.

Norwalk has a ton of new apartments going up - you and the Mrs. would definitely find a decent rental there. The drive for her from Norwalk to Indianola would be a breeze.

    Re: Des Moines Area advice

Indianola and Norwalk are good options. I don't know much about Carlisle.

'Nola is a little bigger. Norwalk is closer to Des Moines, and about a 20 minute drive to 'Nola. It's about 15-20 minutes from 'Nola to downtown Des Moines. Nice little towns that have their own feel, as opposed to a suburb. But not a ton of options for things like restaurants, entertainment, etc., for younger couples. Solid schools (not sure if you have kids).

I've only lived in central Iowa for about a year and a half, but from what I've seen I'd probably avoid rentals on the south and SE side of Des Moines.

We have a 6-week old baby, so schools would probably start to become a consideration when we look to buy, but not a huge deal right now. What is the drive from Norwalk to downtown Des Moines? If it's not actually all that much shorter than 'Nola to Des Moines, that probably makes the most sense.

I had similar reservations about SE Des Moines, but I was just curious if there was a good pocket on that side of town we might want to look at.

10 minutes or so. You can see the Des Moines skyline from Norwalk. Not from Indianola.

Only been down to the Des Moines office once, but I remember it being fairly close to downtown, on Ingersoll Ave.

Check out Altoona. Sister lives there. Up and coming suburb. Lots of new developments, rentals and schools. Easy access for both of you.

Nothing is too far away in the metro w/ freeway and interstate.

    Good luck!

Easter Lake is a nice separated pocket on SE side of des Moines, plenty of nice houses and good rentals.

Moved to Norwalk 3 years ago and love it. Perfect for our situation. Young family with a couple young kids. Its a bedroom community but is growing at a nice pace so there is starting to be more things to do. Has most if everything you need and 10 -15 minutes away from everything. Fantastic schools.

His wife would be working in Indianola. They're looking for most convenient location based on her in 'Nola and him working in Des Moines.

    Re: Des Moines Area advice

recent thread that talked about the areas:

    http://www.cyclonefanatic.com/forum/...-dsm-area.html

Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel ashamed. Then look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than selfish and worry about my liver."

There are no neighborhoods that you have to avoid in Indianola.
