Angry DirecTV OTA HD Option No More

Well it's official, DirecTV finally discontinued the HR20 HD-DVR that also had two OTA ATSC tuners and replaced it with the HR21 that is exactly the same except for the fact that you can't hook up your OTA HD to it. Most people I know had expected both tuners to be sold next to each other with the HR20 just costing a little more since DTV has to license the ATSC tuners but no such luck. If you're signing up for DTV any time soon and want to be able to get the locals via OTA, you might want to hurry and call to make sure you get the HR20 instead of the HR21.

Personally, I had one on order to be installed this weekend but they pushed the installation back so I currently don't have anything on order. My usual audio/video retailer that sells DTV systems is out (SolidSignal.com) so I'm going to have to give DirecTV a call directly to see what they can do.

Re: DirecTV OTA HD Option No More

DirecTV doesn't offer the local channels for central Iowa in HD yet so you're stuck using an antenna to pick them up if you want them. Their current (now former) HD-DVR receiver allowed you to use your antenna and it's tuners so you could view the locals just like all the other channels but the new tuner doesn't allow that. Sorry for the abbreviations above

Re: DirecTV OTA HD Option No More

With all of the channels they are pushing towards HD now, do you think the local ones could be coming soon too?

We are planning on ordering HD sometime in November/December. I will finally have 2 months out of school to take care of some things.

Re: DirecTV OTA HD Option No More

Has anyone had problems with a software download issue with an HR15 (I think) DVR? It's been acting up for last few days and it never completes a download. Any help would be great, or a point in the right direction.

Re: DirecTV OTA HD Option No More

Actually, they are going to continue to sell the HR20 to people that need OTA, like us in central Iowa. The HR21 is only for the people that get HD locals via Sat. There is no way DTV would take away the ability to record OTA if that was your only way to get those channels.

That is unless something that I am not aware of was just announced.

I'm not currently a subscriber so I don't have the HR15 but DBSTalk.Com is the end-all be-all for DTV discussion and they will be able to answer any question imaginable.

That's what I thought but the resellers and installers are saying they were told from DTV that they officially stopped manufacturing the HR20 and they aren't allowing the installers to order any more. That's according to the rep I called and talked to and several installers on DBSTalk.com.

Re: DirecTV OTA HD Option No More

Last I knew, Des Moines was scheduled to get HD Local thru Directv sometime 1st quarter of 2008. Since they plan on being able to carry every local in HD that is available to them in every market in the country, they do not see a need to support the OTA tuner. Makes business sense in that they probably save some cost that way, but does stink if you need the OTA tuner in the interim.

Re: DirecTV OTA HD Option No More

Yeah they are supposed to get them Q1 but they were supposed to get them quite a while ago originally. Hopefully they keep the compression as low as possible so we don't get the overly pixelated HD picture that we had on Mediacom, that was horrible (Huxley runs off of Mediacom's DM sub-station rather than Ames so it's a long ways from the hub and all of the channels were crappy - thank goodness we're in WDM now).

I was just at a DirectTV store last weekend, and they said des moines locals will be broadcast over satellite early next year, so it actually is a good deal to not have to use the antenna.

There is no way they will take it away, they just cannot do that until they have some way for you to get HD locals. Take me for instance, I have directv, and literally 90% of the stuff I record is network HD.
